In September 2018, a father of two cut up his wife’s body after she died inside their Kansas City, Missouri, hotel room, claiming he feared the state would take the children if they saw a dead body.

Justin Rey, then 36-years-old, was later convicted of child endangerment in the case. He was not charged with his wife’s death. He told a judge the reason he did not call 9-1-1 after Jessica Rey delivered their baby in the hotel room, then killed herself, is because he wanted to protect his family.

He later changed his story, saying that his wife died during childbirth.

Photos with the Corpse

Justin forced the children, the newborn and a 2-year-old little girl, to pose for photographs with his mother’s corpse. After the children posed for photographs, Justin said he “skinned her like a fish.” He then dismembered her body and placed the parts into a cooler. He flushed some of the body parts down the toilet because they “would not fit” inside the totes.

He then took his wife’s dismembered body to a storage unit in Lenexa, Kansas.

Witnesses See Justin Leave with Cooler

Witnesses saw Justin leaving the hotel dressed as a woman wearing a wig. Those witnesses saw Justin dragging a cooler behind him. He also left bloody sheets inside the hotel room.

The manager of the storage facility notified police after the overnight alarm went off. The storage unit was 45 degrees. When the manager confronted the man, he told her his wife died. The manager notified police.

An officer who responded to the scene said the 2-year-old looked unhealthy and resembled a “cancer patient.” The child was also filthy and had a severe eye infection. The children were taken into protective custody.

Investigators Discover Porn on Justin’s Cell Phone

Justin provided his cell phone to the police to aid in the investigator. Officers who searched the phone found pictures of child porn. There were also screenshots of nude children and children in nudist camp. His search history included “nudist teen.”

Justin denied knowledge about the photos or the search. He told police the only other adult present when the searches were made was his wife. He told police she would never search for child porn.

He went on to tell the court that he is a Christian Scientist who does not have sexual desires and would never look at porn. He suggested that police interfered with the investigation.

Justin claimed that he and the children planned to travel to Arizona to a Native American reservation to give his wife a proper burial. He denied endangering his children and claimed they were “perfectly healthy.”

Justin Rey Sentencing

He ultimately received a 104-month prison sentence. He was convicted in Johnson County with two counts of aggravated child endangerment, two counts of child misconduct and three counts of possession of child pornography.

He must also register as a sex offender when he is released from prison.
