Telma Boinville, a 51-year-old teacher who also worked as a part-time cleaner, was murdered in 2017 in a Hawaii vacation home by 23-year-old Stephen Brown and his alleged girlfriend Hailey Dandurand who was 20. At the time of her death, Boinville, a teacher by profession, was working a second job cleaning vacation homes to supplement her income.

The 51-year-old was discovered dead in December 2017 at a vacation rental on Ke Iki Road. Makana, Telma's 8-year-old daughter, was discovered there as well, bound up.

THE ROBBERY AND DEATH OF BOINVILLE

In 2017, Stephen Brown and his girlfriend, Hailey Dandurand, were robbing a North Shore vacation home when Boinville entered to clean it. Her 8-year-old daughter was outside the house in a car as she was later allegedly tortured and tied up by Brown and Dandurand.

Telma's head suffered blunt force trauma. She was in a pool of blood when the detectives found her. According to reports, Stephen Brown told her daughter that her mother had been killed and maintained no remorse for his actions. Telma was strangled by Brown, who then killed her with a machete and other tools.

The location of the crime

According to the prosecution, the two tied the girl up, duct taped her mouth shut, and cold-bloodedly told her that her mother had passed away. A jury found 28-year-old Stephen Brown guilty of murder, two counts of kidnapping, and burglary in connection with Telma Boinville's 2017 murder and the kidnapping of her 8-year-old daughter.

TESTIMONY OF STEPHEN BROWN

Stephen Brown attempted to blame his girlfriend for the murder of Boinville during his trial, taking the witness stand in his own defense. William Bagasol, his attorney, asserted that his client had not committed murder but only burglary and kidnapping. Brown testified in court that on the day of the slaying of Boinville, he and Dandurand had smoked marijuana before entering the vacation home through an unlocked window.

Brown informed the jury that Boinville entered the house and quickly walked in on the couple. He claimed that Hailey Dandurand, who was carrying a machete, had ordered Boinville to lie down so that they could tie her up and restrain her.

Brown further asserted that after leaving the house to secure the perimeter, he came back to discover Boinville dead and his girlfriend drenched in blood. Boinville, he claimed, was "unharmed" and "perfectly fine" when he briefly left the premises. On the other hand, the prosecution claimed that blood was discovered on Stephen's clothing and not Hailey’s. He claimed to have later on picked up Boinville's daughter from her car outside the house.

Later, the two took Boinville's Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and drove away from the incident. Brown and Dandurand were later arrested in a Walmart parking lot. However, Medical Evidence including Brown’s autopsy contradicted his testimony. Brown was also the only witness for this defense. In addition, he was said to be the only person strong enough to overcome Boinville during the deadly confrontation.

Meanwhile, Makana Boinville Emery, Boinville's 13-year-old daughter (who was 8 years at the time of the murder), testified about her kidnapping by the killers.

She stated that she was waiting in her car, watching a movie, when she noticed a man with green hair emerges from the house. She went on to say, "He came to the truck and grabbed me," and, "He said we killed your mother." "Then the man carried me up the stairs, followed by the girl, and they tied me to the bed."

STEPHEN BROWN IS CONVICTED

A 12-person jury found him guilty on January 19 2023 of murdering Telma Boinville in December 2017 following a two-week trial.

The jury in the Stephen Brown murder case has not yet decided whether to impose a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole on the killer. Due to the numerous felonies, Brown could receive an extended sentence of life in prison without the chance of parole.

On the other hand, Hailey Dandurand's trial for the murder of Bonville is set to begin in July. She allegedly entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations leveled against her. She is accused of murder, kidnapping, and burglary.
