What Was Hinterkaifeck?

Hinterkaifeck was an isolated farm located roughly 70 kilometres north of Munich in Bavaria.

The people living there included farmer Andreas Gruber, his wife Cäzilia, their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriel, Viktoria’s children Cäzilia and Josef, and the family’s newly arrived maid Maria Baumgartner.

Life on the farm may have appeared ordinary from the outside, but strange incidents reportedly began occurring shortly before the murders.

Mysterious Footprints Before the Murders

One of the most famous details of the Hinterkaifeck case concerns footprints discovered near the property.

According to later accounts, Andreas Gruber found footprints in the snow leading from the nearby woods toward the farmhouse.

What made them disturbing was that he reportedly could not find another set of footprints leading away.

Around the same period, Gruber was said to have heard noises coming from the attic. A newspaper that apparently did not belong to the family was also discovered on the property.

These incidents have generated endless speculation.

Was somebody secretly entering the house?

Was a stranger hiding somewhere on the farm?

Or were these unrelated events later connected to the murders because of what happened next?

No definitive answer has ever been found.

The Hinterkaifeck Murders

On the night of March 31, 1922, the household was attacked.

Investigators believed that Andreas Gruber, Cäzilia Gruber, Viktoria Gabriel and seven-year-old Cäzilia Gabriel were killed in the barn.

Inside the farmhouse, investigators discovered the bodies of maid Maria Baumgartner and two-year-old Josef.

The new maid had reportedly arrived at Hinterkaifeck on the same day she was murdered.

Even stranger, the killings were not immediately discovered.

Did the Killer Stay at the Farm?

This is one of the details that transformed the Hinterkaifeck murders from a terrible crime into a legendary true crime mystery.

After the family was already dead, there were indications that someone may have continued living or working around the farm.

The animals appeared to have been cared for, and food may have been consumed inside the house.

Meanwhile, people began noticing that something was wrong.

Young Cäzilia failed to attend school. The family did not appear at church. Mail began accumulating.

Finally, on April 4, 1922, concerned neighbours entered the property and discovered the victims.

If the evidence was interpreted correctly, it raised a terrifying possibility: the killer may have remained at Hinterkaifeck after murdering the family.

Why Was the Hinterkaifeck Case Never Solved?

Police investigated numerous theories and suspects, but the crime scene presented serious problems.

People had already entered the property and disturbed the scene before investigators could properly preserve it.

Robbery also appeared questionable as a motive because money and valuables were reportedly still present.

Over the following decades, investigators considered people connected to the family as well as theories involving personal relationships and family conflicts.

One frequently discussed suspect was Lorenz Schlittenbauer, a neighbour who had previously been connected to Viktoria Gabriel and was among the people who discovered the bodies.

His behaviour generated suspicion, but suspicion is not proof, and he was never convicted of the murders.

Other theories have suggested that Viktoria’s husband, Karl Gabriel, who was believed to have died during World War I, might somehow have survived and returned.

Again, investigators never established this theory as fact.

The Dark Family Secrets Behind the Case

The investigation also revealed troubling details about the family itself.

Andreas Gruber had previously been convicted of incest involving his daughter Viktoria.

Because of the family's complicated relationships, investigators considered whether the killings were connected to jealousy, paternity disputes or other personal conflicts.

A later analysis of the case by German police students reportedly concluded that the murders were likely connected to a personal and emotional conflict.

However, identifying a possible type of motive is very different from identifying a killer.

More than 100 years later, the Hinterkaifeck murders continue to appear in documentaries, books, podcasts and discussions about the world's greatest unsolved true crime mysteries.

The reason is easy to understand.

Footprints apparently leading toward the house but not away from it.

A killer who may have remained at the scene.

And an investigation that produced theories but never a confirmed answer.

The farm itself was eventually demolished, eliminating another potential source of physical evidence.

Today, the victims are remembered at a memorial near the location of the former farmstead.
