Miguel Pro, whose full name was José Ramón Miguel Agustín, was born into a mining family on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico. He was the third of eleven children, four of them had died early as infants of a very young age.

From a very, very young age, he was called "Cocol" as a nickname. He had two sisters who went and joined a convent. He entered the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit novitiate at El Llano on August 15, 1911. He was executed on November 23, 1927) under the presidency of Plutarco Elías Calles on charges of bombing and attempted assassination of former Mexican President Álvaro Obregón. His theology studies Pro was sent to Enghien, Belgium, where the French Jesuits (also in exile) had their faculty of Theology. He had terribly health problems, and his health continued to deteriorate. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest on August 31, 1925.

On November 23, 1927, Miguel was executed without trial. President Calles, gave direct orders to have Miguel executed for the assassination attempt.

On the day of his death, Miguel walked from his cell to the courtyard to the firing squad, blessed all the soldiers, knelt down softly, and briefly prayed quietly. He declining a blindfold, faced his executioners with a crucifix in one hand, and a rosary in the other, and held his arms out in imitation of the crucified Christ and shouted out, "May God have mercy on you! May God bless you! Lord, Thou knowest that I am innocent! With all my heart I forgive my enemies!" Before the firing squad was ordered to shoot, Pro raised his arms in imitation of Christ and shouted the defiant cry of the Cristeros, "Viva Cristo Rey!" – "Long live Christ the King!" When the initial shots of the firing squad actually failed to kill him, a soldier shot him at point-blank range. 40,000 people attended his funeral and he became a hero to Mexicans, and people throughout the world. A national newspaper carried the pictures of his execution moments before the firing squad killed him. The bravery that he showed at the time of his death, and the fervent love of his enemies. A national hero in Mexico. Blessed Miguel Pro we salute you. Amen!!!
