Mark Redwine of Colorado killed his 13-year-old son Dylan in November 2012 after the child saw disturbing selfies of his father eating feces from a diaper and wearing lingerie.

As part of his custody arrangement with his ex-wife, Mark Redwine picked up his 13-year-old son, Dylan, from the airport on November 18, 2012. Dylan Redwine, on the other hand, did not want to visit his father that day. In reality, he hadn't wanted to see his father in the weeks and months leading up to this visit.

Dylan was unhappy with his father since he had seen some very shocking photos of Mark the previous year and planned to confront him about them during this visit.

And when it was discovered that Dylan had seen those images during that visit, something horrific happened inside Mark Redwine's head, prompting him to erupt in wrath and murder his own son. Dylan's remains were subsequently discovered in the foothills near Mark's home months later, indicating that Mark Redwine went to great efforts to hide the disgrace of his youngest son confronting him over those unfortunate images.

The Beginning

Mark Allen Redwine was born on August 24, 1961. Redwine lived in La Plata County, a harsh and mountainous part of southwest Colorado, at the time of Dylan's visit in 2012. Redwine was twice divorced, had two children with his ex-wife, Elaine, and was fighting for custody of their 13-year-old son.

Dylan Redwine and his father

Dylan Redwine refused to visit his father and informed his brother Corey that he was disturbed and uncomfortable with him — most likely because both brothers had seen horrifying photographs on their father's computer in 2011.

The photographs showed their father wearing a wig and women's lingerie and eating what seemed to be feces from a diaper.

Dylan and his father's relationship deteriorated over time, and Dylan requested that Corey email him the dirty images of his father before his November visit so that he could confront his father.

Dylan's mother, Elaine Hall, was worried about the visit after witnessing how unhappy he had been with his father. Her attorney, however, warned her that if Dylan did not travel out to visit his father, she could face punishment.

Mark Redwine was aware that his older son, Corey, had viewed the revealing photos prior to Dylan's trip.

Worse, during a text argument with Redwine, Corey admitted that he was aware of the photographs and antagonized his father, saying, “Hey beautiful, you are what you eat, look in the mirror.”

Dylan Redwine Trip To See His Father

On November 18, 2012, Redwine picked up his son at the Durango-La Plata County Airport, and surveillance footage from the airport and a Durango Walmart revealed little personal interaction between Redwine and his kid. Dylan had planned to spend his first night in town at a friend's place, but Redwine refused, so they both stayed at Redwine's house that evening.

Dylan had arranged to visit a friend's house the next morning via text messages, and his last communication with anyone on his phone that night was at 9:37 p.m. Dylan's friend received no response when he texted him at 6:46 a.m. on November 19 wondering where Dylan was.

Later, Redwine asserted that he had left his home that morning and discovered his son missing when he got back. Dylan's mother, though, immediately had a suspicion that Redwine wasn't being completely truthful. And the area around Redwine's house in the forests and mountains was thoroughly searched.

Days after Dylan vanished, one of Redwine's ex-wives revealed to detectives a troubling conversation they had earlier, in which Redwine claimed that if he ever had to dispose of a body, he would leave it in the mountains. During their divorce and custody battle, Redwine allegedly chillingly threatened to "murder the kids before he allowed her to have them."

The Suspicious Behavior of Mark Redwine

The partial remains of Dylan Redwine were discovered on Middle Mountain Road on June 27, 2013, more than seven months later, around eight miles from Redwine's home and about 100 yards away from an ATV track.

In April 2013, a witness saw Redwine driving alone in the vicinity. He then left town and didn't come back to look for Dylan until June 2013. Redwine had an ATV and was well-versed on Middle Mountain Road.

After the boy's remains were found, Redwine had a suspicious chat with one of his sons in which they discussed how the body's remaining parts, including Dylan's skull, would need to be located before experts could decide whether blunt force trauma was the cause of death.

Then, in 2013, Redwine made a strange appearance on the Dr. Phil program, where he and Dylan's mother exchanged accusations. Redwine also made a point of refusing to take a polygraph test.

According to court filings, investigators found evidence of Dylan's blood and a human cadaver fragrance in various areas throughout Redwine's living room in August 2013.

A dog also detected human remains in the living room, near the washing machine, and on the clothes Redwine had claimed to have worn on the evening of November 18, 2012. The same team that had the dog later conducted a search of Redwine's car in February 2014, and their results showed that there was cadaver scent in multiple locations inside the Dodge truck.

Then on Nov. 1, 2015, some hikers found Dylan Redwine’s skull further up Middle Mountain Road. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Division confirmed the locations of Dylans remains, and later his skull. No animal known to the area would carry a body that distance up the mountain, and no animal would then transport the skull an additional one and a half miles through that terrain.

Mark Redwine Is Convicted

Following a grand jury indictment on July 17, 2017, Mark Redwine was taken into custody for second-degree murder and child abuse. His trial finally began in 2021, after many COVID-19 limitation delays.

Dylan sustained a fracture above his left eye, and a forensic anthropologist testified that two marks on his skull were probably made by a knife at or shortly before the moment of death.

The images, according to the prosecution, sparked Redwine's murderous wrath.
