Crime Chronicles: Nuisance Streamer gets his Comeuppance!

*Sigh*

You know, sometimes I think social media has just become a plague on humanity. This whole 'influencer' culture is an absolute disaster. It seems like we've had a new issue with influencers almost every year. Don't believe me? Here are a few:

• 2018 - Logan Paul films a dead body in Aokigahara (the Japanese suicide forest) and includes the body in the video thumbnail.
• 2019 - Fake Lifestyle nonsense, where creators would pretend to have a lifestyle they didn't have.
• 2023 - YouTuber Tanner Cook is shot while harassing some guy in a mall as a 'prank'.

Now, Logan Paul does seem to have grown up a bit and taken accountability for his incident. Unfortunately, he's only one of a few who did that sort of thing. Tanner Cook didn't; he made his whole incident a joke.

Still, every now and then, you see an influencer get his comeuppance. These are rare, but they are almost always satisfying. The case of Johnny Somali is more than satisfying.

Who is Johnny Somali?

Ramsey Khalid Ismael was born in 2000. He's a streamer with a very bad reputation. He started out on YouTube and Twitch in 2023 as a lifestyle/travel streamer. When he was booted off of Twitch (probably because of his content), he moved to Kick...and was banned there too.

In 2024, he moved to Rumble, and did a brief stint with an independent platform called Parti - which banned/suspended him shortly after his arrival. His YouTube channel was also terminated later that year after an incident...trust me, we'll get to that in a sec.

Japan

Ismael traveled through Japan in 2023 and caused all sorts of trouble. He shouted anti-Japanese insults at the locals, including remarks about the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He was apparently confronted a few times, but it didn't stop him.

His reign of terror stalled in August 2023 when he trespassed onto a construction site and yelled at the workers. He and his camera guy were arrested on suspicion of trespassing. Now, do you think he stopped his nonsense?

Nope, he was arrested again in September for obstruction of business (disturbing the peace) for disrupting a restaurant with loud music. This time around, he was kept in custody until December 2023. He was eventually convicted in January 2024 and fined 200,000 Yen.

Israel

The Israel stuff is crazy. On April 5, 2024, he filmed himself putting up images of Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein, and Adin Ross on the Western Wall of Jerusalem. Now, you may be wondering:

"What's the big deal? It's a wall."

The big deal is that the Western Wall is a massive historical religious monument. It dates back to Herod the Great. Ever heard of the Temple of Solomon? No? Okay, here's the short version of that story. It was a temple built by King Solomon allegedly to house the Ark of the Covenant. The temple served as the focal point for the Jewish religion for around 400 years before the Babylonians came along and destroyed it in 587 BCE.

A second temple was built centuries later, and Herod the Great did some major expansions on the temple complex. The Western Wall is all that's left of that expansion.

With that context in mind, I think we can all see the problem here. You don't put pictures of sexual predators or internet personalities on religious monuments. In fact, you don't mess with monuments of any sort, it's just not done! As if this stunt wasn't bad enough, he got into more trouble two days later.

On April 7, he was detained - I guess that's a nice way to say 'arrested' - at a protest in Tel Aviv. Why? For, get this, sexually harassing a female POLICE OFFICER...I just...I can't deal with this level of stupidity. He was released 16 minutes later.

South Korea: Statue of Peace Incident

Okay, remember his stunt at the Western Wall? You think he learned from that experience? Of course not, he did the same thing in South Korea. He caused all sorts of trouble. He was blasting North Korean propaganda and music. That was bad enough, but it was his stunt with the Statue of Peace that eventually brought him down.

The Statue of Peace is a monument dedicated to the comfort women of the Sino-Japanese War. For those who don't know, 'comfort woman' refers to a woman forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military during Japan's occupation of Korea.

Ismael performed lewd acts (lap dances, kissing, etc.) on the statue. His excuse? He didn't know the significance of the statue. He faced quite a list of charges, but here's the important bit: he was convicted.

Yes, this public nuisance is going to spend the next six months in a South Korean prison and, unless I'm mistaken, there's going to be hard labor involved. Frankly, it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

Will He Learn?

Sadly, no, I don't think he will learn anything from this experience. He'll probably get out of prison, be deported to the U.S. and just keep doing stupid things and getting into trouble. Still, it's nice to see at least some punishment meted out.
