Bad Cops

To deflect and swerve in Evansville, Indiana.

Evansville Police have been accused of many instances of misconduct.

Law enforcement officers are a critical part of maintaining law and order in a vicious world. Their jobs are not easy, and I'm quite sure this author would not want the undertaking. The dangers law enforcement officers face on a daily basis can't be fathomed by most people. They deal with the dregs of society. The worst of the worst. They are required to handle every situation that is thrown at them with professionalism and they are put through a barrage of tests prior to and during their training and subsequent employment. Physical and mental evaluations are conducted. Potential officers undergo extensive background checks, even speaking with family, coworkers and friends of the applicant before being forced to take a polygraph examination.

I'm sure in this age of "pictures, or it didn't happen," a reasonable officer operates on the assumption that even if his body camera is not operational, someone, somewhere, has video surveillance of what has just happened. Most officers of the law conduct themselves in the manner their oath dictates, but some of them just don't care who is watching. Their position of power is abused, misused and often dangerous. Officer Martin Montgomery is the latter. A bad cop. A dangerous cop. An officer of the city of Evansville, endowed with the coercive power of the state, set about creating nightmares, the blue line surely protecting him. Or did it?

Evansville Police Officer Martin Montgomery.

A 2009 call to 911 led to Jennifer Cox's unfortunate contact with Martin Montgomery. Jennifer and her friend, Debbie Jackson, had been drinking together when things got heated. Jackson claimed Cox hit her and called 911 to claim the same. Two cars were dispatched to the disorderly conduct call, but Martin Montgomery called the other car off, explaining he could handle the situation alone. Martin took statements from both of the women, explaining that either they could go to bed or he could drive Cox to her house in an effort to separate the two and avoid a trip to the jail. It is at this point that Officer Montgomery became Offender Montgomery.

Montgomery called dispatch to clear the run before leaving his car running and walking Cox to her door. Since he had already cleared the run and left the car running, dispatch was under the assumption that the officer was no longer with Cox. He was inside her living room, having followed her into her house. He asked her if she would give him oral sex and she declined. Again he asked, and again she declined. He then removed his gun belt, unzipped his pants to expose his penis, placed his hands on her shoulders, pushed her to her knees and towards his groin, and forced her to perform oral sex. He wasn't finished with Cox yet, though. When he tired of oral sex, he moved on to anal sex before vaginally raping her. When he was finished, he zipped his pants, put on his gun belt and simply went back to work.

Cox reported the incident and another party stepped forward and claimed Montgomery forced himself on her in 2008. Attorneys for Montgomery called into question the credibility of both women, as both admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the rape. The jury saw through the deflection and found Martin Montgomery guilty of two counts of criminal deviate conduct and sentenced him to serve twelve years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Offender Martin Montgomery currently lives at 5130 S. 800 E., Francisco, Indiana. At least, that is, until a recent eviction was filed and granted. He is ordered to vacate the property by August 12, 2019.
