“My client knows she is in a most peculiar stance. She knows thst it is abnormal for the justice system to try this case. We all do. But what is not strange or unusual are her abilities as a good cop. She solved one of the most major cases in American history. I know that’s a completely different circumstance, but this is the key: you have the prerogative to choose just how much of an upstanding individual Kim Jergensen is.

Time and again, she has proven to be an unusual and profoundly moral person.”

“As the lead investigator in this very case, she has prolonged her capabilities. In the way she looked at her situation and still prevailed as a consummate professional, that trabsformed havoc and chaos into a sense of good standing. Her power in accentuating justice over faith and the evils of altruism are both boons to her character.”

“Kim Jergensen did not kill Susan Reynor. Susan was done in by someone who would have easy access to her cell. Someone who would have known when she ate and slept. My client could have never had the chance to kill Susan.”

“The combination of her sterling past and her virtuous present should be enough to acquit her on these charges. This happens when people within the system have the knowledge of cellmates and inmates. This was a coordinated effort between guards and inmates. They plotted something devious.”

“The reason why Detective—” Brenda started.

“Objection! She’s not a cop!”

“She was one in this very case.”

“I’ll allow it,” the judge declared.

Brenda felt a surge of credibility to her own words. She knew that she was working the courtroom like a chicken bone.

“So that’s where we are. A detective who knows the law and loves order. Her coolness and ability to sift through facts is what we should consider here. We’re the ones who should look inside ourselves. We ought to look at the aspects of this case that best describes the way that Kim acts. When we weigh the facts of the issue you will see that Detective Jergensen was focused on being an FBI agent. This was as far away from her ideal of going through training as she could ever imagine.”

“There’s only the truth and that truth is that Kim Jergensen is completely not guilty. If you delve into your souls, you will discover that there is only one truth. And if you have any humanity, you will paint Detective Kim Jergensen innocent.”

Some applause arose. The gavel sounded. And the courtroom had order again. Some discussion also, though subdued, created a sense that the people wanted to talk about the words Brenda expressed.

The family of Susan looked like stone walls. Their faces seemed grim but also receptive in a way. The amount of tissues passed around saw the ideas change it seemed. Even though they weren’t on the jury, the jurors could tell the difference in the appearance of them and of Kim.

She, on the other hand, was an ice cube. Her maplewood colored skin never gave up a single frown or cough or laugh. She only flipped her hair twice and that was the extent of her expressions. As the court adjourned for lunch, Brenda turned to Kim.

“Alright. It’s a slugfest. We can tell that they’re going to harp on the murder case you beat. You have the chance to still stay in the fight. You’re in this fight?”

“Of course,” Kim said. She replied with exasperation mixed with confidence. Only she could pull off such a feat. That was Kim.
