A young man; A family's honour and a silent fear

A young man; A family's honour and a silent fear on social media

I was a sincere and hardworking student. From my early school years until matriculation, my life was simple and disciplined. My routine was clear: school, home, books, and dreams about a better future. I did not own a mobile phone, and at that time, I did not feel any loss. My parents trusted me, and I tried my best to live up to that trust.

After I cleared my matric exams, my parents decided to give me my first mobile phone as a reward. They were proud of me and believed that I was mature enough to handle responsibility. Holding that phone felt exciting. It felt like freedom and entry into a new world. I was happy, unaware of how powerful and dangerous that small device could be.

At first, everything seemed harmless. I created accounts on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. I watched videos, listened to music, and followed trends. Slowly, my phone became part of my daily life. Then, without noticing, it became something I could not stay away from. My screen time increased, and my focus on studies and real life started fading.

One day, I received a message on Facebook Messenger from a girl’s profile. She introduced herself as Asnahan. Her messages were polite, friendly, and comforting. She listened to me and spoke in a way that made me feel understood. Being young and inexperienced, I did not question her identity. I trusted the profile without thinking twice.

Over time, our conversations continued. Gradually, she began asking personal questions. Later, she asked for my private photos. I felt uncomfortable, and somewhere inside me, I knew it was wrong. But curiosity, emotional weakness, and poor judgment overpowered my common sense. I ignored the warning signs.

I made a mistake that I deeply regret.

Soon after I sent the photos, everything changed. The truth came out harshly. The person behind the account was not a girl at all. It was a boy. Even worse, he belonged to a family that was known to mine. His tone changed immediately, and he started threatening me. He blackmailed me and warned that he would expose my private moments if I did not obey him.

Those days were the darkest period of my life. I lived under constant fear and pressure. I was terrified not just for myself, but for my family’s honor and reputation. In our society, family respect matters deeply. The thought that my parents could suffer shame because of my mistake broke me emotionally.

I became quiet and withdrawn. I avoided people and felt ashamed to face anyone. I could not sleep peacefully. My mind was always filled with fear and regret. I blamed myself again and again for being careless and trusting the wrong person.

For a long time, I stayed silent. I believed silence would protect my family. But silence only made the fear heavier.

Finally, I realized that hiding the truth would not save me. With great difficulty, I gathered courage and went to my uncle. I told him everything honestly. I expected anger or disappointment, but instead, he listened calmly and supported me. That moment gave me strength.

With his help, we contacted the authorities. A police case was filed, and proper action was taken. The blackmailer’s mobile phone was confiscated, and all the data was cleared. When I finally knew that the threat was gone, I felt relief that words cannot fully describe. It felt like my life had been returned to me.

This experience changed me forever. It taught me that the digital world is not always safe. Fake profiles, scams, and blackmail exist behind screens. One careless decision online can affect not only an individual, but an entire family.

I am sharing my story for awareness. Children and young people must understand the risks of social media. Never trust strangers online. Never share private content. Protect your privacy and think carefully before every action.

I was once a brilliant student.

Today, I am a wiser and more responsible young man.

Some lessons are painful,

but they are never forgotten.
