1. Bella Shmurda

Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda earlier this year got sued by his record label for copyright infringement and breach of contract. The label, One World Global Records, claims that Bella has contrary to the provisions of the contract, been engaging in the release, publication, distribution and promotion of songs and videos without the consent and authorization of the label. According to them, the singer also failed to pay them royalties from the use of these songs he made while still under the label. The label also claim ownership of the trademark of the name, 'Bella Shmurda' and claim ownership to the copyright of all musical works and recordings released under or in connection to that name. Court documents from the proceeding have been released to the public. Here is one part of the document that outlines a number of the songs Bella is being sued for. The songs include, Vision 2020 Remix, Amope, Only You, Cash App, and more. You can find more of the document here.

2. Annie Idibia

Pero Adeniyi, the ex-lover of popular Nigerian singer, Innocent Idibia popularly known as 2Baba, sued 2Baba's wife, Annie Idibia to the tune of N500 million on the 10th of November, 2021 on the grounds of defamation of character. Pero also demanded an apology along with the N500 million payout that is to ease her 'emotional distress, damages, embarrassment and shame suffered due to the malicious and defamatory publication against her.'

This lawsuit comes because Annie accused 2Baba of sleeping in Pero's house - something that Pero through her lawyers, Okonjo Odiawa & Ebi, described as malicious claims and disparaging and false information.

3. Baba Ijesha

Nigerian actor Baba Ijesha is facing a six-count charge bordering on allegations of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by penetration.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court Thursday fixed December 15, 2020 for ruling on the admissibility of confessional statement of the actor.

4. Tonto Dikeh

Tonto Dikeh's ex-lover, Prince Joseph Kpokpogri earlier this year dragged the actress and the Department of State Services, DSS, before a Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking the enforcement of his fundamental rights. In the case dated 20th September, 2021, the plaintiff asked the court for a restraining order to stop the DSS from further inviting him. He is also requesting the sum of N10 Billion as compensation for mental trauma, emotional stress, and severe damage. More of the case can be found here.

5. Burna Boy

Singer, Q2 Born Star, sued Nigerian award-winning singer Burna Boy to court for copyright infringement on the song Jerusalema. According to Q2, he is the creator of 'woro si woro', a term Burna Boy used repeatedly in the song. Q2 said:

I'm the originator of woro si woro, I sang the song Woro. I made the song earlier last year before the pandemic.

The thing is I'm yet to get a response from Burna Boy regarding my song. We're just in court so I will not want to disclose anything as advised by my lawyer but right now, we're in court so we're definitely going to iron that out. I'm just asking for him to do the needful. It's either you pay me the money or if you don't want to pay me the money, then you could give me a verse. We're already in court as I said so I already told him what I want.

All these kin court cases, nawa o!

That's All.
