Virginity - Intact Yes Or No?

I asked you a question, now don't you lie to me

I was reading this article by Yewande Adeleke, called The Shocking History of Virginity Testing, published on another platform. It's a brilliant article on the historical ritual of testing that a woman's virginity is still intact. The article goes on to describe the barbaric rituals that women suffered in the middle ages, and beyond, by being tested in this way.

This article is well worth the read as it is very informative. I enjoyed the history and detail in the article but for me, it was a extremely tough read.

It bought back memories of when I was twelve or thirteen years of age. I've mentioned before I have had a difficult childhood, and will probably write a lot more on that tropic, but where were we?

Oh that's right, twelve or thirteen years of age and I arrived home from school one day to an angry step-mother but had no idea why.

I didn't get a chance to change my clothes or put my school bag down, all routine after school chores.

I'll call my Step-mother 'Mum' moving forward, since she had drilled that title into me years ago, with a wooden spoon across the back of the legs if I ever forgot.

So Mum told me, as soon as I walked in the door, that she had been told from people around town, that I was no longer a virgin.

I looked around to see if we were alone as it's such an embarrassing subject, I certainly didn't need the entire family listening in to this one. A sigh of relief to see no one else is around.

I asked, "Who are the people that told you that?"

"That need not concern you and you didn't answer the question," Mum shot back at me.

"Well they are wrong as I am still a Virgin. I have never had sex."

I was hoping with everything I had, that was the end of this embarrassing conversation.

But no, Mum wasn't convinced and she was adamant that she was going to find out. She told me that she flat out, didn't believe me and told me to go and get in the car.

I did as I was told, having no idea what was in store for me. I didn't know why I was in the car or where we were going.

Mum climbed in behind the wheel, backed out and started driving down the road. One look at her face and I knew it was best to stay silent. It didn't take me long to realise we where heading to the hospital. It's only a small town we live in and only takes minutes to get anywhere.

Mum parked the car and told me to follow her. I still didn't know why we were here.

We entered the hospital, Mum told me to take a seat while she spoke to the nurse at the front desk. After some to and fro conversation, Mum sat down beside me.

It was not a long wait before we were called into a small private room. Just the three of us, including the male doctor.

You guessed it, I was here so Mum could have absolute proof that I was still a Virgin.

I won't got into detail of the physical exam that then took place, but I will say that it was mortifying and I cried through the entire examination.

Happily, Mum got the proof she wanted as it was confirmed that I was, in fact, still 100% categorically a pure Virgin.

Did I hope for an apology on the way home? Not a chance, I was way too old to still believe in fairytales!

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

What the actual hell! That's crazy! You were still a kid. Like who would do that.
