Things we mistake for love at 15

We confuse signs with feelings. Words with promises. People with destiny.

🖤 Introduction:

At 15, we think love is when they text you back quickly. That if they look at you in class, it's because they like you. That if they text you "goodnight 😘," something's already serious. And it's not that it doesn't feel real... it's that we confuse many things with love, when in reality, it's other things disguised: attention, need, emptiness, validation.

Sometimes it seems like we love, but we're just looking for someone to make us feel less alone. And yes, that hurts too. But it's not love.

🧠 Part 1: Attention Isn't Always Love

We've been taught to confuse being available with being interested. If they text you back quickly, if they respond to your stories, if they ask you "Is everything okay?" when you're feeling awkward... you already consider them special. But often, they don't do it because they care about you. Sometimes they just have free time, are bored, or have no one else to talk to.

We think they choose us, when they're just using us as a temporary distraction. And that's not love. That's being in the wrong place, waiting for something that was never real.

🥀 Part 2: Jealousy Isn't Affection

If he gets jealous, it's because he cares about you... right? Wrong. Sometimes jealousy comes from insecurity, not love. We think it's cute when he tells us "don't talk to him" or that he gets angry if we like someone. We like to feel "protected," but we confuse control with care.

Love doesn't lock you up, it sets you free. If someone needs to control you to feel safe, then they don't love you: they love themselves so little that they can't stand to see you shine without their permission.

🧩 Part 3: We Use People to Fill Voids

At that age, no one teaches us to be alone. And being alone is scary. So we look for someone—anyone—to make us feel "enough," even if they don't understand us, respect us, or value us. And that's where the disaster begins.

You end up saying “I love you” to someone who doesn't really know you. Or you hold on to emotional crumbs because you think that's all you deserve. But you're not in love. You're lacking. You're searching for what's missing inside, outside.

🎭 Part 4: Pretty Words, Empty Intentions

“I love you.”

“I like you.”

“I don't want to lose you.”

All those phrases sound like music the first time you hear them. And we cling to them as if they were eternal promises. But when they're not accompanied by real actions, they're just air. Empty pretty words we use to idealize something that never existed.

Learning to read between the lines—to see what they're doing, not just what they're saying—is one of the hardest lessons at 15. But also one of the most necessary.

✨ Part 5: Real Love vs. Invented Love

At 15, we often don't love people... we love ideas. We fall in love with what we think they are, not what they really are. We invent perfect versions of them in our heads. We turn them into saviors, into happy endings, into dreams. And of course, when they don't fulfill that role, we break.

It wasn't love. It was expectation. It was a mirage. But it was also necessary to learn to see with open eyes... not just with a racing heart.

🔚 Conclusion:

What we feel at 15 can hurt as much as what we'll feel at 25. Even if it isn't real love, even if it's full of mistakes. But there, amidst all that, there is also something valuable: learning.

Learning to see signs. To listen to ourselves. To stop romanticizing what isn't good for us. Learning that love shouldn't hurt from the start. That you don't need someone to love you to be enough. And that true love, when it comes, will feel different: freer, more honest, calmer.

And it won't confuse you. It will calm you.
