THE UNCHOSEN

His love was unconditional. Her truth was fatal

By Pamela GordonPublished 4 months ago • 4 min read

In a not-too-distant future, in a city where technology and daily life were intertwined, lived a man named Lucas. He was a hard-working man, dedicated to his job as a systems engineer. By his side was Elena, his wife, with whom he had shared the last ten years of his life. Elena was a beautiful woman, with an infectious laugh that lit up any room. However, behind that smile lay a dark secret that would change their lives forever.

Lucas had noticed that Elena was behaving strangely. She often received messages on her device and would leave without giving any explanations. When he asked her, she would smile and assure him that everything was fine. Elena's silence began to unsettle him. He felt the air in their home become heavy, as if a dark cloud were about to burst.

Time passed and one morning, Elena gave him news that changed his life. With tears in her eyes, she confessed that she was pregnant. Lucas felt a wave of happiness, but soon that happiness turned into confusion as he faced reality. Was it really his child? Doubts invaded his mind, but the love he felt for Elena led him to accept the news with joy, although a small voice inside him kept questioning the paternity.

Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. During all that time, Lucas tried to immerse himself in the excitement of becoming a father. However, the shadow of mistrust continued to haunt him. One night, while Elena was in the shower, Lucas decided to look at her desk, searching for answers to the questions he dared not ask. There, he found a diary, covered in dust, that he had never seen before.

Upon opening the diary, Elena's words wounded him deeply. In the pages, Elena spoke of a forbidden love, of secret nights with a lover. His eyes filled with tears as he read how the lover had promised to be by her side, and how she had doubted her own happiness with Lucas. But most devastating was when he found the statement: "This child is not Lucas's, it is his." Lucas's world crumbled in an instant. All his assumptions and hopes evaporated like smoke in the air.

He was furious and hurt, but also confused. How could he believe Elena? When she came out of the shower, she found him sitting at the desk with the diary in his hand; her husband's expression was one of despair and betrayal. She understood immediately what had happened.

"Lucas, I..." she began to say, but he interrupted her.

"Why didn't you tell me the truth? Why did you lie to me?" His voice echoed in the room, full of pain.

Elena, with tears in her eyes, knelt before him. "I was sorry. I was afraid of losing you. My lover wants nothing to do with the child. I am terrified. I just wanted to protect our life together."

"Protect us? You've ruined everything. This baby... is not mine. How could you!" Lucas's rage exploded and he left the room, leaving her alone with her confused thoughts and growing guilt.

Days passed in which Lucas immersed himself in his work, trying to forget. However, the truth kept haunting him. Eventually, he decided to face reality. He spoke with Elena, seeking affirmations since he had to make a decision about his future. She begged him to stay together, that love could overcome this obstacle. But Lucas knew it wouldn't be easy.

One night, when Elena was already asleep, Lucas took his device and began to research paternity and love. He discovered forums of people who had faced similar situations and read stories of how relationships faded and others grew stronger. Lucas reflected deeply on every word. He began to realize that the decision was not just about the child, but also about his own heart.

In the end, Lucas made a decision. He sat down with Elena and explained that, although the betrayal had caused deep damage, he could not stop loving her. He decided to be a father, even though the child was not biologically his. In his heart, he felt it was the right thing to do.

"I will start the path of accepting this new future," he told Elena, his voice trembling. "But I need to know that this will not happen again. We must build this together."

Elena accepted, promising to be honest from here on out. Together they faced a new challenge. The relationship was not rebuilt immediately, but they began to work on it. As the days went by, although the memories of the pain were always present, a new form of love also grew.

Finally, one day, when their son was born, Lucas felt nothing but love for the little one. Accepting the child meant accepting the complexity of life, its mistakes, and the capacity for redemption. As he looked at the baby's little face, Lucas understood that family was not defined solely by blood, but by commitment and action. And so, although the truth had been painful, in the end, the union was stronger than the secrets that once separated them.
