The Discordant Symphony Of A False Purpose

Do we have a purpose?

Static silos of the mind assert the truth that lies within ones desire, a discordant beacon that plays symphony of vanity, a noble cause is but an unplugged empty sound that covers actual melody of making each other’s existence a better one. A recognition that the quest for a magnificent objective is merely an empty tune.

I refrain from being excessively self-centered.

Consumed by thoughts of the crescendo of the life, I am looking at the disturbing sound of the dissonance of unrestrained pride that has been echoing in the heads of many. To work in an orchestra teaches us that everyone is a unique star, and to focus on one’s self, searching for our true calling, like the protagonist of a vivid drama. Is this the melody we are looking for? Now, we are no longer content with living our lives. Rather we chase after ‘the meaningful’ with reckless abandon; ignoring the simple inherent significance of it all; of living and the empathy beneath the surface.

So, self-importance is like an improper conductor who leads his music group unaware of the beautiful music that human beings or business owners are making in the world. It turns into a trap of pride where we find ourselves immersed in the belief that life cannot be meaningless, and it has to have some purpose in order to be worthy. But in our pride we seem to have lost realizing the fact that real magnanimity does not lie in colossal concepts and towering visions but in the universal truth that we are all one.

This temptation I have admitted myself, as I have run after the dreams that one could become great and be obsessed with them. I have sought acclaim in the encouragement of others because I have expected my reason for existence as a human being to depend on success. Thus, I’ve never appreciated the beautiful strings of gentle humanity and love that constitute the unseen melody of existence.

It is quite a plebeian wake-up call, to understand that epic aspiration is just a facade; a curtain drawn over the grand show of life’s music. In the same way, the obsession with significance destroys the harmony in relations between people and erases the primary purpose of humanity, the ability to live together.

When being a part of a large choir, we all sing our own part, and without it the symphony of life will not sound complete. But as the complexity of the melody is not the indication of the band’s identity, so the genuine emotion with which Cab performs his part does not define who he is. Moreover, similar to the piece that is added to the acoustics of the orchestra making it fuller and richer, the exact same action of extending a helping hand makes the fabric of human life more beautiful and complete.

If I have been blinded at all, it has been by the desire of purpose, of something more instead of seeking and embracing the melody of the human relations that surround me; so, if the metropolitan chaos is around me, it is only a reminder of the philosophies that have been around us for ages – that the highest purpose is to find meaning in the human connection and strive for making others’ lives better.

May we all attempt to live such truth, to turn away from the cacophonous clamor of lies and false missions, and dance to the sweet music that is love. For it is in those tiny acts of humaneness that lie happiness, and it is the pursuit of making others’ lives a little less of a burden that reveals the grim, and yet, wondrous reality of living.
