That One Person

The one who makes silence feel safe and chaos feel calm

By sonuPublished 4 months ago • 3 min read

There is always that one person.

Not the loudest in the room.

Not the most perfect.

Just… that one.The one whose name your heart knows before your brain does.

The one who makes a normal day feel a little less heavy.

The one you don’t have to explain yourself to.For some people, “that one person” is a best friend.

For some, it’s a sibling.

For some, it’s a stranger who became home.

For me, it’s the person who understands my quiet. That one person sees you.

Really sees you.

Not the version you show on Instagram.

Not the “I’m fine” version.

The tired version. The messy version. The 3AM overthinking version. When I’m with everyone else, I explain my silence.

“I’m just tired.”

“I’m just quiet today.”

But with that one person, I don’t explain.

I just go quiet.

And they stay quiet with me.

Because they know silence can be comfort too. That one person makes you feel safe.

The world feels loud sometimes.

Full of expectations, judgments, “you should be more”s.

But when I talk to that one person, my shoulders drop.

My breath slows down.

I don’t have to perform.

I don’t have to be impressive.

I can just be. Half-awake, half-broken, fully me.They don’t fix my problems.

They don’t give lectures.

They just say, “I’m here.”

And somehow, that’s enough.

Because being heard is half the healing. That one person remembers small things.

The way you take your chai.

The song you said was “just okay” but replayed 20 times.

The random fear you mentioned once at midnight.

Months later, they’ll ask, “Are you still scared of that?”

And you’ll realize: someone was listening.

Someone kept your pieces safe even when you forgot about them. That one person is your safe place.

You can send them a voice note crying and a meme 2 minutes later.

You can disappear for weeks and come back without explaining.

You can be angry, jealous, insecure, childish…

And they’ll still choose you.

Not because you’re perfect.

But because you’re you.I used to think “that one person” only existed in books and songs.

Then life gave me one.

Or maybe I found them.

Or maybe we found each other when we were both lost. They don’t know how much they mean to me.

I’ve never said it properly.

“I love you” feels too small.

“Thank you” feels too late.

“Please don’t ever leave” feels too scary. So I don’t say it.

I just send them songs.

I just save them a seat.

I just remember their coffee order.

I confess without words.Because “that one person” already knows.

They feel it in the way I go quiet around them.

They feel it in the way I laugh louder at their bad jokes.

They feel it in the way my whole body relaxes when they text back.If you have that one person, hold them close.

Text them right now.

Tell them a stupid meme.

Tell them nothing at all.

Just let them know you’re thinking of them.If you don’t have that one person yet, don’t lose hope.

They exist.

Sometimes they come late.

Sometimes they come in unexpected forms.

But when they do, you’ll know.

Your heart will be quiet for the first time in years.“that one person” doesn’t complete you.

You were already whole.

They just make being whole feel lighter.

They don’t fill your empty parts.

They sit beside the empty parts and keep you company. So this is my confession.

My silent, simple confession:

Thank you, that one person.

For making my chaos feel calm.

For making my silence feel safe.

For making me feel like I’m enough, just as I am.You may never read this.

You may never know I wrote it.

But if you do…

Just know: you’re my favorite chapter.

My safest place.

My softest landing.
