A Simple Driver’s License… Until It Wasn’t
California’s DMV Data Sharing Plan Is Raising Big Questions About Privacy and Trust For years, getting a driver’s license in California meant something more than just the right to drive. For many immigrants—especially those without legal status—it represented stability, dignity, and a rare sense of safety in everyday life. A simple card that allowed people to commute to work, take their children to school, and live without constant fear of being stopped for driving without a license.

Being Drugged Doesn't Make It Less Traumatic
Trigger warning: Very raw confessions about sexual assault I've survived several forms of sexual assault in my life. Being molested by the man under the blanket at four. My ex-husband, getting drunk and overpowering me habitually. Being shamed and humiliated into sex. Having sex weaponized against me in relationships. It's a typical world. And while I teach my daughters not to accept it, I have quietly resigned to the fact that I'm just another stat.

The Old Man at the Bus Stop
It was raining that evening. The kind of rain that makes everything feel heavier—your clothes, your thoughts, your mood. Sara stood under a small bus stop shelter, hugging her bag tightly as cold wind brushed past her. It had been a long, frustrating day. Nothing had gone right. Work pressure, unanswered messages, and a constant feeling that she was falling behind in life.

Behind my mask, Your Reflection
I have never stopped searching for the origin of my being, tracking the reasons that shaped my current identity. It is a constant obsession. Is it not yours as well? Our actions sometimes escape us, becoming senseless, and we turn our gaze toward others in an attempt to translate ourselves. Sometimes, we go as far as seeking our own reflection in another, hoping finally to find that understanding which the silence of our soul denies us. We all go through trials and joys that shape us, experiencing feelings we believe to be unique. But deep down, are we not all seeking the same thing? To find that other person who, through their own experience, shares the same emotional frequency and finally gives us the feeling of being understood.

Near Death
I had a near death experience once. Well, I think it was anyway. I’m not a religious person in any sense; thankfully it was never shoved down my throat by my stepmother in my youth. However, in a way, a part of me wants to believe in the spiritual aspect of things. Though logic has always been sitting pretty on my shoulder, I can’t help but feel giddy like a child again when things go bump in the night. Ghosts, witches, old wives’ tales – I love it all. So why was my psyche so quick to shove this to the back, ‘this didn’t happen’, brain compartment? Wouldn’t it froth in curiosity from this like it does for other ‘spooky’ things?
