She Was His Entire World… But He Was Never Hers

The pain of loving someone who never loved you back

By IhsanullahPublished 5 months ago • 4 min read

Zayan never believed in love at first sight.

Until he met her.

It was an ordinary college morning.

Students were laughing, talking, and rushing through the hallways.

But in the middle of all that noise, Zayan noticed one person.

A girl sitting near the window quietly reading a book.

Her hair moved softly with the wind coming through the window, and sunlight touched her face perfectly.

At that moment, something inside him changed.

Her name was Esha.

And without realizing it…

Zayan slowly started falling in love with her.

At first, it felt harmless.

Just admiration.

Just small feelings.

But feelings become dangerous when they grow silently.

Every day, he looked for her before entering class.

Every time she smiled at him, his entire day became brighter.

Even small conversations with her felt special.

But the problem was simple.

To Zayan…

Esha was everything.

To Esha…

He was just another friend.

Still, he stayed close to her.

Because sometimes people accept friendship when love feels impossible.

Months passed, and they became closer.

They talked daily.

Shared jokes.

Studied together.

Stayed on calls late at night.

And every moment made Zayan love her more deeply.

His friends noticed it immediately.

“You’re in love with her,” they said.

But Zayan always denied it.

Not because it was false.

But because the truth scared him.

He feared rejection more than heartbreak.

One evening, Esha called him crying.

The guy she liked had ignored her message.

Zayan sat quietly listening to her pain while hiding his own.

He comforted her for hours.

Made her laugh again.

Stayed awake the entire night just to make sure she felt okay.

And the saddest part?

She never realized the person healing her broken heart was the same person whose heart she was unknowingly breaking.

That is the cruelty of one-sided love.

You suffer silently while pretending everything is normal.

Years passed.

But Zayan never confessed his feelings.

Sometimes he stood in front of the mirror practicing what he would say.

“I love you.”

Three simple words.

Yet they felt impossible to speak.

Because deep down…

He already knew the answer.

One afternoon, Esha arrived smiling brighter than usual.

“I need to tell you something,” she said excitedly.

Zayan’s heart started beating faster.

For one dangerous second, he thought maybe she finally felt the same way.

Then she said the words that destroyed him completely.

“I think I’m in love with someone.”

It felt like the world stopped.

But somehow, Zayan forced himself to smile.

“Really? Who is he?”

Every word hurt like a knife.

As she talked happily about another guy, Zayan sat there pretending to be supportive while his heart quietly shattered inside his chest.

That night, he cried for the first time in years.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silently.

The kind of silent pain that nobody notices.

After that day, everything changed.

Every time he saw her smiling at her phone, he knew she was texting him.

Every time she talked about him happily, Zayan felt his chest tighten.

But still…

He stayed.

Because love makes people endure pain they should walk away from.

Months later, Esha officially entered a relationship with that guy.

Zayan congratulated her with a fake smile.

And afterward, he locked himself in his room for hours.

He kept asking himself one painful question:

“Why was I never enough?”

That question slowly destroyed his confidence.

The hardest part about one-sided love is not rejection.

It is feeling invisible to the person who means everything to you.

One evening, Esha looked at him and said softly,

“You’re honestly one of the best friends I’ve ever had.”

Friend.

That single word broke him more than anything else.

Because after loving her for so long…

That was all he ever became.

Years later, Esha got engaged.

When Zayan saw the picture online, his hands started shaking.

He stared at the screen for a long time before quietly turning off his phone.

That night, he walked alone through empty streets under the rain.

And for the first time, he finally accepted the truth:

Some people become part of your heart…

Without ever becoming part of your life.

Slowly, Zayan started distancing himself.

Not because he hated her.

But because loving her was destroying him emotionally.

One day, Esha texted him:

“You disappeared. Is everything okay?”

Zayan looked at the message for several minutes.

Then he typed something.

Deleted it.

Typed again.

Deleted it again.

Finally, he replied:

“Yeah. Just trying to find peace.”

But what he truly wanted to say was:

“I’m trying to survive loving you.”

Years later, Zayan still remembered her sometimes.

Not with anger.

Not with hate.

Just sadness.

Because some people never stop loving.

They simply learn how to live with the pain quietly.

And maybe that is what one-sided love really is:

Loving someone deeply while knowing they will never belong to you.

💡 Moral:

One-sided love is one of the deepest emotional pains because it teaches you that love alone cannot force someone to choose you. Sometimes the strongest thing a person can do is silently let go of someone they truly love, even when their heart wants to hold on forever.
