If Rejection Was a Person

I lived a reality of rejection until...

By STEPHEN IBEHPublished 5 months ago • 3 min read
Silent nights, cold mornings, empty stomachs...

I got rejected more times than I could count.

Not “I’ll get back to you.”

Not “maybe later.”

I mean straight-up:

“No.”

“Not interested.”

Click.

At some point, it stops feeling like feedback… and starts feeling personal. And soon "personal" start feeling normal. Any outcome different from the usual starts feeling strange.

As a struggling father of 4, who's trying to make end meet, I remember staring at my call log one night.

100+ dials. Zero results.

And the worst part?

I was doing everything I thought was right.

I had a script

I sounded “professional”

I got straight to the point

Still… nothing.

If things continued this way, my kids would starve. This job was commission-based only. No result, no pay!

The thought hit me like a punch to the chest.

If things continued this way… my kids would starve.

Not metaphorically. Not eventually.

Literally.

Four mouths.

Four little humans who didn’t understand “low conversion rates” or “bad sales days.”

They only understood one thing:

“Hunger.”

The bills didn’t care either.

Rent was due.

Electricity was ticking.

The fridge… was slowly becoming an empty echo.

And me?

I was stuck in a commission-only job where effort meant nothing.

No sales…

No commission.

No commission…

No income.

Every morning, I picked up my phone like a man walking into battle.

Dial.

Rejected.

Dial.

Voicemail.

Dial.

Click.

Meanwhile, in the background…

A small voice:

“Daddy, what are we eating today?”

And for a split second…

I didn’t have an answer.

Sleep became a stranger.

Because every night, the same question sat on my chest:

How do you provide for a family… when your effort isn’t enough?

I wasn’t chasing success anymore.

I was chasing survival.

Then something clicked.

Not on the phone.

In my head.

The Mistake I Was Making

I was trying to sell too fast.

Every call sounded like:

“Hi, I’m calling to offer…”

That one line killed everything.

Because nobody wakes up hoping to be sold to.

What I Changed (This Changed Everything)

Instead of pitching…

I started talking like a human.

My new opening sounded like this:

“Hey, quick one—are you currently handling so and so problem yourself, or do you have someone helping you with it?”

That’s it.

No pressure.

No pitch.

Just a question.

And suddenly…

People didn’t hang up.

They answered.

They explained.

They engaged.

What I Learned From those Rejections

1. People don’t hate offers. They hate being rushed.

2. Your tone matters more than your script.

3. Curiosity closes more deals than confidence.

The Moment Everything Changed

On the 1001th call, or so it felt…

Someone didn’t hang up.

They laughed.

We talked.

And 8 minutes later…

I landed my first client.

Not because I became a better seller overnight.

But because I stopped trying to sound like one.

If You’re Struggling Right Now

Whether it’s sales, freelancing, or just putting yourself out there…

Rejection isn’t a stop sign.

It’s feedback you haven’t decoded yet.

You don’t need 100 new strategies.

You need one small shift done consistently.

Mine was simple:

Stop pitching.

Start connecting.

And it changed everything.
