I’m Tired of Being Strong All the Time
Even strong people break quietly.

People tell me I'm strong.
They say it like a compliment.
Like I should wear it as a badge of honor.
Like strength is something I chose.
But here’s the truth:
I didn’t ask to be strong.
I became strong because I had no other choice.
When you grow up in a house where emotions are treated like weaknesses, you learn quickly to silence your own. Crying? That was for when no one was watching. Breaking down? Only acceptable behind locked doors and muffled pillows.
So I learned to smile when I was hurting.
To nod when I wanted to scream.
To carry the weight of everyone else’s problems, even when I was drowning in my own.
They call that strength.
I call it survival.
No one sees the cost.
They don’t see the nights I sit in my car, parked in the driveway, afraid to go inside because I don’t have the energy to be “okay” for anyone else.
They don’t see how I scroll through my contacts at 2 a.m. looking for someone I can message, only to put the phone down because I don’t want to “burden” anyone.
They don’t see how the smile I wear in public feels like a costume that doesn’t fit anymore.
Because when you’re the strong one, people forget to check on you.
They assume you’re always fine.
They come to you for advice, for support, for reassurance—but never think to ask if you’re okay.
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to fall apart out loud.
To sob in the middle of a conversation and not apologize for it.
To say “I’m not okay” and have that be enough.
But I’ve played this role for so long, I don’t know how to stop.
Strength has become my mask, and I’ve worn it so tightly it’s starting to fuse to my skin.
I envy people who can be vulnerable without shame.
Who cry in front of others.
Who say “I need help” without their voice shaking.
I want to be one of them.
I want to be held instead of doing all the holding.
I want someone to tell me, “You don’t have to be strong right now. Just be.”
Because strength without rest isn’t noble.
It’s exhausting.
It’s lonely.
It’s slowly eroding the softest parts of me.
And I miss those parts.
I miss the version of me that didn’t have to be “resilient.”
I miss laughing without guilt.
I miss the freedom of falling apart and trusting someone would catch me.
So if you’re reading this and you’re tired of being strong, I see you.
I know how heavy it gets.
And I’m here to say:
You don’t have to hold it all alone.
You are allowed to break.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to say, “This is too much,” and still be worthy of love.
Strength isn’t about never falling.
It’s about knowing when to stop carrying more than you can hold.
So today, I’m putting it down—just for a moment.
The strength, the mask, the expectations.
I’m choosing softness.
I’m choosing honesty.
I’m choosing to say:
I’m tired.
And that’s okay.
