—Nikki Jacobi, Chief People Officer, YellMark Rhodes is an entrepreneur, business mentor, international speaker and trainer. This is a useful guide to how to give public presentations, including how to work on the content to make it interesting. Rhodes writes in a clear style that's jargon free and gives plenty of tips. There's nothing incredibly new here, but it gives you a solid grounding in what to do and how to get confidence in public speaking. On that basis, I think it's worth a look.Although this book starts off by addressing those who have a "fear" of public speaking it soon moves into a discussion of creating great content and delivering well. I don't have a fear of public speaking - I've been doing it for about 40 years and I now lecture at University. But, it's very easy to slip into a complacent approach so when I was offered the chance to review this book I was delighted to accept.

I learned a lot. Even though I rarely now do the sort of set piece presentations which the author does (at all day events for example) and don't have someone to introduce me or a time keeper to worry about there are some great tips here. I especially liked the Mark's "in motion start" - dealing with that "hesitation gap" which happens in so many public presentations.

I also thought that his thoughts about content creation were very helpful. And his suggestion that sections of a presentation can be likened to an artist playing tracks. By mixing and matching sections/tracks from your repertoire you can have multiple presentations at hand drawing upon the same material. You can re-order tracks to suit the occasion. And if you have timing issues (from your practice sessions you will know if you have timing issues) you can edit or expand your talk.

Practice. As Mark says that's how musicians get to be good. They sing the same song again and again. And not just on the show night. They practice.

Get there early so you can check out the room.

I already do a lot of these things but there are some great suggestions in here which I will adopt. For anyone inexperienced in public speaking this short book would be an excellent starting point.

I could be critical and say that it is slightly repetitive in places, but that may be deliberate reinforcement so I am happy to forgive.

I like the writing style too. Easy to read and understand. A definite 5 stars from me.
