The Chelsea Strategy in 2023 under Todd Boehly has been a strange one all things considered. It is certainly a bold one as this strategy of spending your way out of trouble could certainly work and make us all eat our words but as of right now, it seems more likely that it’s going to have us double down on our criticism.

To understand Chеlsеa FC's rеcеnt strugglеs, it's crucial to start with the club's ownеrship and what it used to be. Sincе Russian billionairе Roman Abramovich's takеovеr in 2003, Chеlsеa had bееn one of thе most succеssful clubs in England, winning five Prеmiеr Lеaguе titlеs and thе covеtеd UEFA Champions Lеaguе twicе. However, in 2022, the Russian ownеrship of Chelsea came undеr incrеasеd scrutiny due to various factors but mainly due to the rising political tеnsions regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. As a result of this, the UK government froze Abramovich's assets in the United Kingdom and it was made clear that Chelsea Football Club would need to have a new owner.

It's been 20 years since Roman Abramovich took over at Chelsea and just as it was back then, Chelsea is the team on everyone's mind when it comes to the Transfer Market. Chelsea were and always have been big spenders when it comes to the Transfer Market but unlike the controlled spending it was under Abrahmobich, it seems that they have now truly hit harakiri. Nine hundred million pounds has been spent in the 2022 Summer and 2023 January Window.

One billion dollars has been spent over two windows just to finish midtable. If you don’t laugh at that you will cry [sorry Chelsea fans]. What about Financial Fair Play you might be wondering? A lot of people have pointed to the fact that private equity investors aren't usually willing to splurge this much without an absolute guarantee that they'll get a Return on Investment which makes this entire way of spending by Todd Boehly and his consortium all the more strange. But the way they’ve avoided financial fair play is by offering to pay off all these transfers in instalments by forcing players to sign ridiculously long contracts so that their transfer fees will be spread across multiple windows. Just for reference, Mykhailo Mudryk has signed a contract at Chelsea all the way till 2031. I don’t even know if Chelsea will still be a running club at that point!

In addition to all of the incessant spending, managerial instability continued to plague Chelsea. Chelsea has always been known to have a ruthless attitude regarding managers. The standards were always very high in the Abramovich Era too. However, recently, the club has been struggling to find a long-term, stable manager who could provide consistency on and off the pitch. Due to the frequent managerial changes, player morale has been disrupted and there has been a lack of any real cohesive playing style. Take this fact on board for example, Since September 2022, Chelsea has had four managers. Four. Due to the lack of continuity and manager instability, the players haven’t really got a system to adapt to. This has become a recurring issue even through the 2023/24 season under Mauricio Pochettino.

To rub even more salt in the wounds, there is a clear striker issue at Chelsea. Hard to believe when all that cash has been spent. But Chelsea has no world-class number 9 who can bury twenty Premier League goals at will. They need a Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, Erling Haalandesque player who will bag the goals for Chelsea to almost singlehandedly pull them out of trouble. The club's striking department has been in disarray and the 100 million pound Romelol Lukaku experiment clearly hasn’t worked. The consequences of not having a prolific goalscorer do have a significant impact on their Premier League and can at times even be the difference between finishing with sixty points and finishing with seventy-five. Chelsea, let’s just say will do extremely well to reach sixty points from the dire straights they’re in now.

At this moment in time, it’s hard to see where Chelsea go from here. Chelsea Football Club used to be incredible with Stanford Bridge being a fortress. Now it seems to be a playground for the opposition. Chelsea used to be a feared opposition and now we see that it has become a fragmented toothless entity that doesn't seem to have a real designated style of play, ethos or philosophy. Something at the club just seems missing. For the sake of Chelsea fans, I am sure they are hoping that buying a striker would resolve all their issues. It would be a start and a step in the right direction that's for sure. The only way they can go is up surely because how much worse can it get?
