Chapter 4

Kevin lowered his backpack slowly and opened the side compartment to pull out a wicked hunting knife.

Two more wolves began to appear, making a total of five. Kevin motioned for Lizzie to get behind him. Lizzie wedged herself between Kevin and the corpse of a tree.

“You survived my first attack. Now, my wolves will have their snack. ATTACK!” screamed the disjointed voice coming from the woods.

The first wolf jumped out at them before Lizzie could look around to find where the voice was coming from. Kevin was ready. As the wolf came down on Kevin’s arm with teeth that looked as sharp as daggers.

Kevin dodged the deadly wolf’s jaws and brought his knife into the wolf’s belly.

Lizzie looked around for a weapon in case the other wolves decided to attack. She found a sharp, heavy branch and positioned herself to defend herself.

Echoes of snapping and grunts filled the deadly frosty air. Lizzie thought the trees all around them swayed with their branches as if they were clapping.

Kevin fearlessly counterattacked each wolf that came speeding at him. Hisses sounds vibrated around the snowy woods.

The last wolf began to circle around, setting his demon eyes on Lizzie. Lizzie saw that and quickly glanced at Kevin, who was in a full brawl with the fourth wolf.

The wolf was slowly slinking towards Lizzie. Lizzie held up her makeshift weapon. Just as the wolf leaped forward, Lizzie swung the branch sweepingly. She felt the branch break into pieces as the wolf’s deadly teeth sliced through it.

Lizzie felt the muscular weight of her husband push her to the ground as he brandished his hunting knife at the malicious wolf. They fought like in a deadly battle. Lizzie was too shocked to move as she watched her husband ruthlessly try to protect her and himself.

Demoniacal snickers rose all around them. It was as if the trees were enjoying the deadly confrontation.

Kevin finally went into the kill and stabbed the wolf in the neck. The chilling laughter stopped. Kevin and Lizzie stood there, surviving the deadly scene. All the wolves were lying there, bleeding out dark crimson blood.

Kevin wiped his hunting knife on the leg of his pants. There was so much blood on him. Lizzie couldn’t tell if any of it was his. Kevin’s parka was in tatters, exposing his red flannel shirt.

“Are you hurt?” Lizzie said as she rushed to him. Kevin caught Lizzie in an embrace. They held each other for a minute. Before he pulled her away, he asked her the same question.

Lizzie inspected his chiseled face, seeing cuts and bruises on his chin, eyebrows, and cheekbones.

“They are superficial, but the one on my arm might need stitches,” Kevin said, holding up his right arm. Lizzie quickly went to their backpack and pulled out some napkins. She then pulled out a bottle of water and cleaned Kevin’s wound.

“We don’t have time for this. These woods are probably going to get even angrier now that I have killed their wolves. We got to go now.” Kevin said abruptly.

The frosted air shifted, and blackish-gray smoke curled up behind the trees. It was as if the trees were inching toward Kevin and Lizzie, surrounding them.

“Run!” Kevin bellowed.

Lizzie followed Kevin’s run diagonally, trying to dodge the malevolent winter trees narrowing their path. The wicked tree branches looked like skeleton arms reaching out to grab them.

“Run, run

time for fun,

I’m going to finish,

what I have begun.

Let’s see if you both

can outrun,

but I will

be happy with just one.”

Sang the spine-chilling voice.

Just then, a gunsmoke-gray, jagged branch with sharp twigs grabbed Lizzie. They whipped her against its menacing tree trunk.

Lizzie released a blood-shattering scream as she became a prisoner of this demon tree. Kevin turned around to see his wife being held prisoner. More skeleton branches snaked around Lizzie. Kevin ran back to try branches off of her. The branches were so intense he couldn’t touch her.

“This is fun what we have begun.

Looks like I have won.”

The spine-chilling voice stated.

Kevin took a deep breath and turned around, looking into the void of the snowy, sinister woods.

“What do you want from us!” Kevin shouted into the night.

He could hear that grunt of Lizzie’s shallow breathing. The branches were squeezing her.

It felt like an eternity, but the wicked oak tree came alive. The knotted eyes glowed a fiery red, and the branches moved like arms. One of the more grotesque knots at the base began to move like a mouth.

“Do I have your attention?

I see you are full of apprehension.

My oh my, you and yours have

entered another dimension.”

The old oak tree’s wicked voice sang.

Kevin couldn’t believe this was happening. He slowly walked closer to his enemy.

“What do you want?” Kevin bit out.

“I want revenge,” the chilly voice from the oak tree said.

To be continued……
