### Chapter 16: Civil War Begins

In 1861, the Civil War erupted after Southern states seceded from the Union, forming the Confederacy. The conflict, initially focused on preserving the Union, soon became a battle to end slavery. Key battles, including Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg, tested the resolve of both sides. President Abraham Lincoln's leadership and his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 transformed the war into a fight for human freedom and equality.
