What's the common thread that ties together Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo with the heroes of age-old legends? (Roar) If I told you that they all share the DNA of a singular hero, would you believe it? Joseph Campbell certainly did. He embarked on a journey through myths spanning the globe, resulting in his magnum opus, "The Champion with a Myriad Countenances," where he recounted numerous tales and unveiled how each one embodies the monomyth - the Hero's Odyssey.

So, what exactly is the "Hero's Journey"? Picture it as an endless cycle. The expedition commences and concludes in the hero's mundane world, but in between, it voyages through an enigmatic and extraordinary realm. Along this odyssey, pivotal milestones emerge. Think of your cherished book or film. Does it resonate with this narrative?

The starting point, the status quo, is where our journey takes off. 1:00: The Call to Adventure beckons; a cryptic missive reaches the hero, an invitation, a challenge perhaps? 2:00: Assistance materializes - the hero inevitably requires aid, usually from someone older, wiser. 3:00: Departure transpires as the hero crosses the threshold from their everyday, secure abode into the unknown realm of adventure. We're definitely not in Kansas anymore. 4:00: Trials are inevitable; being a hero is a herculean task. Our protagonist unravels riddles, vanquishes monsters, and narrowly escapes treacherous traps. 5:00: The Approach is nigh; it's time to confront the most formidable ordeal, the hero's ultimate dread. (Roar) 6:00: Crisis hits, plunging the hero into their darkest hour. Facing death, they may even taste mortality, only to be reborn. 7:00: The Treasure (Roar) awaits, as a consequence, the hero claims an extraordinary reward, garners distinct recognition, or acquires unimaginable power. 8:00: Results diverge from story to story. Do the monsters kneel in reverence before the hero, or do they hound their heels as they flee from this exceptional realm? 9:00: The Return is the final leg of this grand adventure, where the hero journeys back to their ordinary world. 10:00: A New Life begins; the hero evolves, having outgrown their previous existence. 11:00: Resolution ties up all the intricate plotlines. 12:00: Status Quo emerges anew but on a more elevated plane. Nothing remains quite the same once you've tasted the mantle of a hero.

Many beloved novels and movies meticulously adhere to this age-old blueprint. Yet, let's dissect "The Hunger Games" to see how it adheres to the Hero's Journey template. When does Katniss Everdeen heed her Call to Adventure, setting the wheels of the story in motion? When her sister's name is drawn in the lottery. And what about Assistance? Who will lend a hand on her journey? Enter Haymitch. Departure? Absolutely, as she boards a train headed for the Capitol.

By now, you might be asking: What connects you with Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo? Well, you share the most fundamental bond of all - your humanity. The myth of the Hero's Journey transcends all human cultures and undergoes constant updates, because we humans use symbolic narratives to reflect upon our own lives. While you may not be engaged in dragon-slaying or combating Voldemort, you do confront problems of equal magnitude. In the words of Joseph Campbell, "In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek." So, what's your symbolic cave? Perhaps auditions for the school play, baseball tryouts, or the enigmatic realm of love? Be vigilant for this narrative in the books, movies, and TV shows you encounter; you'll undoubtedly spot it time and again. But also, be attuned to it in your personal journey. Listen closely for your own Call to Adventure. Embrace the challenge, vanquish your fears, and lay claim to the treasures you seek. Then, embark on the cycle anew. The hero's journey, with its universal appeal, continues to captivate and inspire, showing that the power of storytelling is timeless and ever-relevant. So, as you venture through your own narrative, remember that your path is a reflection of the journeys that have captivated humanity for eons, from myths of old to the modern sagas of wizardry, survival, and unexpected heroism.
