Announcing the return of Niémans, the protagonist of Crimson Rivers, The Last Hunt is a suspenseful thriller filled with surprises dating back to Nazi Germany.

Quotes from "The Last Hunt":

"If you have faith, you can move mountains."

"Everyone was a victim of their own dreams."

"It's better to submit than to give up!"

"He was disgusted by a society that wanted to ban everything in the name of doing good. He would never be complicit in this most terrible dictatorship, insincere, nauseating, and used to soothe consciences."

"The time it took to blink an eye was enough to see all the details; women didn't need any more time to assess the power they were facing."

"Most people believed that when they executed their decisions, they would become 'flawless' or transform into a 'unique' individual, but quite the opposite, these promises were never fulfilled, and they wounded people deeply. Everyone was a victim of their own dreams."

"He had become a gray stain, a moving shadow, an indefinite shape that didn't reveal any human characteristic.”

"People mostly believed that when they executed their decisions, they would become 'flawless' or turn into a 'unique' individual, but on the contrary, these promises were never fulfilled, and they wounded people deeply. Everyone was a victim of their own dreams."

"Everyone was a victim of their own dreams."

"A person thought they were alone in the world with another person. And then, without another person... they truly realized they were alone."

"He was disgusted by a society that wanted to ban everything in the name of doing good. Insincere, nauseating, and used to soothe consciences, he would never become a part of this most terrible dictatorship."

"In the end, there was something that wasn't taken into account, a winning woman."

"She had everything to be happy, but what she truly loved was being unhappy. Love and light attracted her, but darkness and pain excited her."

"All hunts are equivalent. The strongest kills the weakest. The death of the innocent is the reward of the filthy bastards.”

"The Last Hunt" Review - Personal Comments:

Pierre Niémans and Ivana Bogdanovitch; Hunting Game: Our hero Pierre Niémans, known from "The Crimson Rivers." In his last mission, he was seriously injured and physically recovered after a long treatment process. However, psychological healing will take much more time. The organization does not want to see Niémans acting recklessly in active missions. He is assigned to desk jobs first, then to teaching duties at the academy. Yet, despite Niémans' rule-breaking nature, he is a skilled and intelligent detective with a keen sense of smell. For this reason, Niémans is asked to assist in solving crimes in the regions under the responsibility of the Gendarmerie in the countryside, and he agrees. He brings along Ivana, a former student of his during his teaching days, who experienced the Yugoslav civil war and is of Croatian origin. Ivana admires her teacher Niémans greatly. They complement each other very well. Ivana, who has had a childhood scarred by the war, is as normal as someone in her situation can be. Niémans and Ivana find themselves in their first mission in Alsace, a region on the German border. The victim is the heir of one of Germany's wealthiest families, the Geyersberg Family. The manner of death is reminiscent of how hunters approach their prey. After all, their family places great importance on hunting. We get to know the main theme of the book, Pirsch Hunting. The hunter gives the prey a chance. He follows it step by step, gives it a chance to escape, and even shows respect for the prey after capturing it, as part of the known ritual of Pirsch Hunting. The victim is found in the forest, much like prey in a Pirsch Hunting. Are the other members of this wealthy family also in danger? Is the killer protesting the family's passion for hunting? Or is there something entirely different going on? The book seems to focus more on our protagonist, Pierre Niemans, than on the detective case. He is portrayed as a tired and aged wolf. Still independent-minded, but his sense of smell has diminished, and his instincts and reflexes have dulled, resembling an old wolf. We witness many of the mistakes he makes. Granted, these mistakes lead to solving the case, but our aging wolf isn't as powerful as he used to be, just like in "The Crimson Rivers." We will also witness the occasional French-German rivalry. Of course, we are on the French side. After all, the incident occurs on the border, but the investigation continues on German territory because the victim's family is German. Besides, boar hunting is illegal in Germany, and the heir is murdered on French soil. With its descriptions, language, and fluidity, it's a typical Grange novel. I recommend you to read it.
