Book Summary of “One Second After” by William Forstchen

John is forced to lead his group in a struggle for survival against malnutrition, disease, and anarchy as civilization implodes and contemporary comforts vanish. The residents of the town must come together to protect themselves and restore their way of life in this harsh new reality because they have little resources and no way to contact the outside world.

“One Second After” is a cautionary story about the frailty of modern society and the value of being ready in the face of possible threats because of its realistic depiction of the downfall of civilization and the human spirit’s resiliency.

Chapter 1 John Matherson attends a meeting at his daughter’s Black Mountain, North Carolina, school at the beginning of the book. When the town unexpectedly loses electricity during the meeting, John knows right away that something terrible has occurred.

Chapter 2 When John returns home in a panic, he discovers his daughter Jennifer and her friend Laura in a state of confusion and fear. They hear on the radio that there has been widespread chaos and devastation due to an electromagnetic pulse strike that has affected the whole United States.

Chapter 3 Disabled communication and power networks mean that John and the villagers must work hard to survive in a world devoid of contemporary technology. They form groups fast in order to evaluate their resources and make future plans.

Chapter 4 The town struggles to deal with food shortages, medical issues, the possibility of looting and violence from strangers, and the reality of their position becomes apparent as the days go by.

Chapter 5 John assumes a leadership role in the community and puts forth much effort to organize the acquisition of supplies for food, water, and medical needs. In addition, he copes with personal issues, such as his wife’s death from low insulin.

Chapter 6 The community is dealing with escalating difficulties in spite of their best efforts, such as disease outbreaks and disputes with nearby settlements over scarce resources. John and his allies have to make tough choices in order to keep their people alive.

Chapter 7 When a party of armed outsiders threatens to raid Black Mountain for supplies, John and the villagers face their worst test to date as emotions rise and resources run low.

Chapter 8 John and his companions are getting ready for a confrontation with the raiders in a desperate attempt to defend their village. To protect themselves and maintain the delicate society they have established in the wake of the EMP strike, they must rely on their cunning and bravery.

Chapter 9 Both sides suffer fatalities in the fierce struggle that ensues from the encounter with the pirates. Even if they prevail, John and the villagers still have to deal with the harsh realities of living in a post-apocalyptic world, which leaves them scared and unsure about what lies ahead.
