Arachne

In a story, there will most likely be a person with no gratitude. Otherwise known as a person who doesn’t give thanks for what they have; they don’t even take for granted. They take for their own ability, not someone else’s. In this story ``Arachne`` by Olivia Cooldidge, the main character, Arachne, was the person with no gratitude. When Arachne had an opportunity to weave and dye she was better than her father, and she didn’t give any credit for her skill to him. All she did was say that she got the skill from her practice. Therefore, taking her skill for granted, Arachne was turned into a spider. Arachne’s character traits lead to her eventual fate because of her selfish, and ungrateful actions, her rude emotions, and her dramatic emotions.

First, Arachne’s character traits led her to her eventual fate with her selfish and ungrateful actions. These quotes demenstraight that arachne’s actions are selfish and ungrateful because she doesn’t thank for the skillful abilities. She takes all the credit as to that she taught herself how to dye, not her father. Another reason she was turned into a spider wasm;because of her loss to the god, Athene. Arachne didn’t want to be proven that the god was better than her because she was selfish. This is only one reason why Arachne was turned into a spider.

Second, Arachne’s character traits led her to her eventual fate also with her rude words. For example, the author says, “‘Stupid old women, said arachne indignantly”, “who gave you a right to speak in this way to me? It is easy to see that you were never good for anything in your days, or you would not come here in poverty and rags to gaze at my skill”(Coolidge 2). This quote illustrates that arachne has rude words because she was disrespecting an old woman with rude comments like “stupid old women”. Also she said, ``I see that you were never good for anything back in your days”. She had no respect for the old woman and because of that, she was turned into a spider for not listening to the old woman. She was defeated by athena and she tried to kill herself which then she was turned into a spider by Athena. This is also another reason why arachne was turned into a spider.

Lastly, Arachne’s character traits led her to her eventual fate lastly because of her dramatic traits. For instance, the author stated, “I will not live under this insult,'' she cried, and seizing a rope from the wall, she made a noose and would have hanged herself” (Coolidge 4). This quote indicates that arachne has dramatic traits because she didn't want to be proven wrong. So she quickly made a long rope and made a noose. Seizing the rope from the wall, she tried to hang herself. Before she could she was turned into a spider by Athena. This was the last reason why arachne was turned into a spider.

In conclusion, Arachne was turned into a spider because of her selfish and ungrateful actions, her rude words ,and her dramatic traits. Her selfish and ungrateful traits led her to being a spider because of her selfish act of being beaten by athena so she tries to disrespect her. Because of Arachne's rude words, she was turned into a spider for not having no words to say, just to be rude about her being as good as Athena. Ultimately, Arachne’s eventual fate into becoming a spider was decided by her selfish and ungrateful traits, her rude words, and her dramatic emotions.
