If had you been living a century ago, things would’ve been different; but today, the sun doesn’t rise gracefully if we do not wash out faces in the morning. A vital step in having healthy skin, washing the face has become a norm today. And such is the popularity that millions of facewashes capture in the market today. We can go on without brushing our teeth but not without washing our faces. But did you ever question how face wash works?

Face wash and its different types out there

Among all the body parts, the face (along with hands and feet) stays open to air all the time. Considering the eye-blinding pollution taking over the natural air, a need to have something that could prevent our faces from pollution was seen. Consequently, face wash was born. The face wash is a cleansing product specifically designed for use on the face. It's typically used to remove dirt, oil, makeup, and other impurities that can accumulate on the skin throughout the day.

Today, there are different types of face wash in the market. Here are a few that you might see the next time you visit the market:

• Foaming cleansers

• Gel cleansers

• Cream cleansers

• Oil cleansers

Now, let’s learn about how it all works under the skin.

How does face wash work? - The science behind

Human skin is mainly divided into three layers: Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis. Epidermis is the top layer and suffers the maximum damage that air pollution curses it with. One of the main ingredients that work as a fuel for the face washes is Surfactant. Surfactants are ingredients that help to break down and remove dirt and oil from the skin. They help the product travel deeply into the skin, thereby pulling out oil and dirt from the deepest pores. The work gets done by lowering the surface tension between the skin and the water, allowing the water to penetrate more deeply into the skin.

Apart from it, many face washes also contain other ingredients that can help to cleanse and improve the skin. For example, you might have heard of some face washes containing exfoliants. An exfoliant is something that is abrasive and thus helps to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Other facewashes may contain moisturizing ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which can help to hydrate and soothe the skin. Ingredients today are used more as marketing gimmicks and less as something helpful. But more than the ingredients that you must go for, there are ingredients that you must avoid.

Harmful ingredients that many facewashes contain include:

• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

• Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

• Parabens

• Triclosan

• Fragrance

• Polyethylene (PE) or Polypropylene (PP)

• Formaldehyde

• Propylene Glycol

• Diethanolamine (DEA)

• Microbeads

If you ever see these ingredients in a facewash, remember the name and run away like a chicken.

How to choose a face wash?

Sometimes we hear someone lauding a facewash and buy it. The result? The face wash, instead of providing glow, snatches it like a baby. Whenever you buy facewash, have a few things in mind beforehand.

• Start with determining your skin type. Your skin could be an oily, dry, combination of both, or sensitive. Knowing this is important as different face washes cater to different skin types.

• Always go for natural ingredients and avoid the deadly ones.

• Avoid face washes with harsh exfoliants; you do not want your skin texture to be sand-like.

• Consider the season and your daily routine when selecting a face wash. For example, if you live in a dry climate, opt for a hydrating face wash.

• Try a patch test before putting it all over your face and sighing thereafter.

And at last, buy it from reliable sources. There are many excellent sites like Shopify, but free, that sell quality health and beauty products at competitive prices.
