The Train That Only Stops for Regret

She wasn’t late—the world just moved on without her.

Ella had always been late.

Not by much—just enough for things to slip through her fingers.

Missed calls. Missed chances. Missed people.

But she never thought she’d miss something like this.

It started on a Thursday.

The sky had been heavy all day, clouds hanging low like they were waiting for something to break. Ella reached the station just as the first drop of rain touched the ground.

Platform 3.

Her train was supposed to arrive at 6:15 PM.

She checked the board.

ON TIME.

For once, she smiled.

At 6:14, the rain turned into a quiet drizzle.

At 6:15—

Nothing.

No train.

No sound.

No announcement.

Just silence.

A minute passed.

Then two.

Then five.

Ella frowned, stepping closer to the edge of the platform.

“Excuse me,” she asked a man nearby. “Has the train been delayed?”

The man didn’t respond.

Didn’t even look at her.

That’s when she noticed something strange.

No one was moving.

Not really.

People stood frozen—mid-step, mid-glance, mid-breath.

Like a paused video.

Her heartbeat quickened.

“Hello?”

No answer.

No movement.

Just the soft sound of rain hitting the platform.

Then—

A distant rumble.

A train.

It approached slowly, headlights cutting through the mist.

But something felt off.

It didn’t slow down.

Didn’t signal.

Didn’t stop.

It just… passed.

Right through the station.

Too fast.

Too quiet.

As it rushed by, Ella caught a glimpse inside.

Passengers.

Sitting still.

All of them staring straight ahead.

Not blinking.

Not moving.

And one of them—

Was her.

Ella stumbled back.

“No… no, that’s not—”

The train disappeared into the darkness.

Silence returned.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown Number

Message: You missed it.

Her fingers trembled.

Ella: Who is this?

No reply.

She looked back at the board.

The words had changed.

6:15 PM — DEPARTED

“But it never stopped…” she whispered.

Another vibration.

Unknown: It stopped. You didn’t.

Her chest tightened.

“What does that even mean?”

The rain grew heavier now.

The platform lights flickered.

And suddenly—

Everything moved again.

People started walking.

Talking.

Breathing.

Like nothing had happened.

Ella grabbed the arm of the same man.

“Did you see that train?”

He looked confused. “What train?”

“The one that just passed!”

“There hasn’t been a train in twenty minutes.”

Her stomach dropped.

She checked her phone.

6:16 PM.

Just one minute had passed.

“No… that’s not possible…”

Another message.

Unknown: Next one arrives at 7:00.

She hesitated.

Then typed.

Ella: What is this?

A pause.

Then—

Unknown: A second chance.

Her heart pounded.

She should leave.

Go home.

Forget this.

But something kept her there.

At 6:59 PM, the rain stopped.

Completely.

Like someone had turned it off.

The platform fell silent again.

Not empty.

Just… quiet.

Wrong quiet.

Then—

The rumble returned.

Another train.

Slower this time.

Approaching.

Ella stood still.

Watching.

Waiting.

This time—

It stopped.

The doors slid open with a soft hiss.

Inside—

Passengers sat in silence.

All facing forward.

All still.

One of them turned.

It was her again.

But different.

Older.

Tired.

Eyes hollow.

The older Ella spoke.

Softly.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Ella stepped back.

“What is this?”

The older version stood up.

Walked toward the door.

“You kept missing things,” she said. “So this place… kept them for you.”

“I don’t understand—”

“Every regret. Every moment you were too late.”

Ella’s chest tightened.

“This train…” the older Ella whispered, “it doesn’t take you somewhere new.”

She stepped off the train.

Now standing face to face with her.

“It takes you back.”

The doors began to close.

“Wait—!” Ella reached forward.

“Don’t,” the older one said sharply.

“If you get on…”

She paused.

“You don’t come back.”

The train hummed.

The doors almost shut.

Ella hesitated.

Heart racing.

Mind screaming.

Then—

Her phone buzzed one last time.

Unknown: Last call.

She looked at the train.

Then at the older version of herself.

“What happens if I stay?”

The older Ella smiled faintly.

Sad.

Tired.

“You move on.”

“And if I go?”

A long silence.

“You relive everything… until you break.”

The doors started closing.

Ella made her choice.

She stepped back.

The train left.

The older version of her disappeared into the darkness.

And just like that—

Everything returned to normal.

The sounds.

The people.

The world.

Ella checked her phone.

6:15 PM.

Again.

The board flickered.

ON TIME.

Her breath caught.

The rain began to fall.

And somewhere in the distance—

A train approached.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown: You’re still here.

Ella didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Didn’t think.

Because this time—

She wasn’t sure if she had ever left.
