The Problem with Eyeshadow Palettes

“Where is the colour story?”

Disclaimer: I do not care how or where you spend your money. Whether you’re rich or poor, how you use your money is none of my business. No one knows their priorities better than themselves, regardless if those priorities are “good or bad.” If some people prioritize makeup over basic needs, all the power to them. But I can most definitely have an opinion on how a purchase and product itself is a waste of money, generally speaking, from a very practical perspective. Today’s topic is eyeshadow palettes from an opinion of someone who likes to collect these things. My main problem(s)? Take a look down below.

  1. A pop of colour in a generally everyday palette is NOT a colourful palette. It does not make sense, because often times it can render the shade useless. (Props to Manny MUA’s Life’s a Drag palette that provides a much more cohesive shade range of colours with the typical beige, it could’ve been better in itself. But not many brands even have that).
  2. I would rather buy that one unique shade on it’s own rather than buy a whole eyeshadow palette, the way things are going
  3. Influencers and brands promote the same recycled product as unique and fill each other’s pockets. (While we the regular folks keep on spending, which is one thing. But the herd like zombie mentality to hate on each other for these brands is totally senseless. Just like they stick together, so should we).
  4. It’s “similar but not the same” is not good enough. No one is going to stare at your eyeball and try to figure out how light or dark that shade of burgundy really is.
  5. My main pet peeve? The design, name, and overall theme of the palette never matches the inside in with the shade range. Tarte (whatever their other problems) and UD’s Naked series at least stay true to their priorities without any senseless theme or packaging promo. Neutral and beige it is and it shall be. Tarte I think would’ve made a killing on the April Fool’s palette, but alas, they played themselves on that one.
  6. Brands are so secure that the majority of customers will keep buying the same product over and over again (ensured by influencers) that they really don’t feel the need to come out with something unique or innovative inside a palette.
  7. Quality has been upped in many brands. And honestly performance really depends on one individual to another anyways. But good quality does not make up (pun unintended) for lack of creativity especially with things that are on the pricier side.

The main pic is how Colourpop’s Mar palette should’ve looked like or something similar to that simply based on the packaging and theme. Those are the shades that come to mind when I think about water bodies, alas, it is what it is.

Let’s forget 2017. But this gimmick by brands keeps on happening still in 2018. WHY? Because we, as customers, defend this. We would rather support a brand instead of logic or ourselves. If you are buying high-end makeup as a collector, you are never going to end up using all your palettes. And for those who like to say, “Oh but I only buy one good palette,” I say to you that brands already have one staple permanent neutral palette. They do not need more than that.

Some examples from 2018:

  1. ABH: When will the velvet blood end? WHEN? Also with the exception of prism, I can find you at least seven shades in Renaissance, Subculture, Soft Glam, and Norvina which are “similar” to each other. And the Norvina palette? I’m pretty sure there are more shades of purple than that. Beige and brown so does not belong in a palette that looks like that on the outside. Just saying! And did they not just too long ago come out with soft game? Where’s the bloody hurry?
  2. Fenty Beauty Morrocan Spice: Pop of colour(s) really do not make sense to me. Anyways what spices come in the shades purple, grey, off green, and blue? Someone, please tell me.
  3. Natasha Denona Mini Lila: Those two golden shades should have been a lilac matte and shimmer respectively. At least I think so, seeing what the palette is called. (I am still going to buy it tho, just for the hell of it. But not on credit. Never on credit). Same issue with her “tropical” palette, if you know what I mean.
  4. Huda Beauty’s “Revamped” Palette: No comment.
  5. UD’s Born To Run: Naked meets Metals. Meh!

I know that there’s more but these were the most recent-ish ones and the most hyped ever brands.

Some brands I appreciate for not coming out with one palette after another like a locomotive. But that does not mean I love or support these brands. It's just one factor that I can appreciate. I can be wrong but I feel like they really don’t come out with one eyeshadow palette after another (like UD, ABH, Colourpop, Tarte etc...).

  • Pat McGrath
  • Pretty Vulgar
  • Storybook Cosmetics
  • Bobbi Brown
  • Makeup Forever

I know I am missing a lot but these came to mind first.

Adieu mon ami (goodbye my friend).

XOXO.
