I Loved Her Quietly… Until Someone Else Almost Took Her Away
Sometimes, the deepest love stories begin with friendship… and almost end with silence.
Some people fall in love in dramatic ways.
At parties.
At first sight.
During unforgettable moments.
But my story with Amena was different.
I fell in love slowly… so slowly that I didn’t even realize it was happening.
Amena had been part of my life for as long as I could remember.
We grew up in the same neighborhood, went to the same school, and spent almost every afternoon together. Everyone around us believed we would eventually become a couple.
But we always laughed whenever someone mentioned it.
“We’re just best friends.”
That sentence became a habit.
A safe little lie we both kept repeating.
Every morning, she would wait for me near the old bakery at the corner of our street. And every morning, I pretended I wasn’t secretly looking forward to seeing her smile.
Amena had the kind of smile that made ordinary days feel lighter.
Even during my worst moments, she somehow knew how to calm me down.
If I was angry, she noticed.
If I was sad, she understood.
If I stayed quiet for too long, she would softly ask,
“What’s hurting you this time, Shahadat?”
And somehow… hearing my name from her always felt different.
Years passed like that.
School became college.
College became university.
But some things never changed.
We still shared food.
Still argued over silly things.
Still walked home together after long evenings.
People changed around us, but we stayed the same.
Or at least… that’s what I thought.
One rainy evening changed everything.
The sky had been dark since afternoon, and heavy rain covered the entire city. I was sitting alone in my room when suddenly someone knocked on my window.
It was Amena.
Completely soaked in rain.
Holding two cups of coffee.
I quickly opened the door.
“Are you crazy?” I laughed. “Why would you come out in this weather?”
She stepped inside and smiled.
“Because I knew you’d be alone.”
That sentence stayed inside my chest longer than it should have.
She placed the coffee on my table while raindrops slowly fell from her hair.
For a moment, I just stared at her silently.
Not because she looked beautiful.
But because she felt like home.
We spent hours talking that night.
About life.
Dreams.
Fear.
The future.
At some point, she suddenly asked,
“Do you ever think about marriage?”
I laughed nervously.
“Why are you asking that?”
She shrugged.
“I don’t know… everyone around us is growing up.”
Then she looked outside the window and smiled softly.
“I wonder who I’ll end up with someday.”
I don’t know why… but hearing those words hurt me.
For the first time in my life, I imagined her beside someone else.
And honestly…
I hated the feeling.
That night, after she left, I couldn’t sleep.
Her voice stayed in my mind.
Her smile.
Her laugh.
Her eyes.
Everything.
And somewhere between midnight and sunrise…
I finally realized the truth I had been running away from for years.
I wasn’t just attached to Amena.
I loved her.
Deeply.
Silently.
Completely.
But the realization came with fear.
Because what if telling her ruined everything?
What if I lost the one person who had always stayed beside me?
So I decided to stay quiet.
I told myself there was no rush.
I believed she would always be there.
But life has a strange way of punishing people who wait too long.
Three days later, Amena called me in the evening.
Her voice sounded different.
Soft. Nervous.
“Shahadat… can we meet tomorrow?”
I smiled.
“Of course.”
There was a small silence before she spoke again.
“There’s something important I need to tell you.”
For some reason, my heart suddenly felt heavy.
The next evening, we met at our usual place near the lake.
Amena looked unusually quiet.
She kept playing with her fingers while avoiding eye contact.
Then finally…
She looked at me and smiled weakly.
“Someone proposed to me.”
Everything inside me stopped.
The air suddenly felt colder.
I tried to smile back, but I could already feel my chest breaking apart.
And before I could say anything…
She softly asked,
“What should I do?”
