Nutritionists have been recommending grapefruit for years, but researchers continue to find that grapefruit’s numerous health benefits make it one of the most valuable natural foods you can consume. The juice is loaded with vitamins A, C, E, and several antioxidants, and grapes are packed with fibre that feeds your gut. Moreover, grapefruit is a zero-calorie food, weighing in at 1.25 grams per 100 grams. Weight loss is the most consistent benefit of consuming grapefruit juice, and it’s known to reduce the body’s fat-induced levels of cholesterol. One study found that people who drank a 500-millilitre glass of grapefruit juice twice a day for 12 weeks reduced their LDL cholesterol by 20% to 30%.

To take advantage of the weight loss benefits, consider substituting half of your morning grapefruit juice for fresh orange juice. Combine the juice with egg whites and cream and top with crème fraîche for an elegant, flavourful breakfast drink. Use 100 grams of sugar per half cup of juice. To curb sugar intake, add black pepper or a pinch of fresh turmeric to grapefruit juice.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the U.S., but some research shows that grapefruit is good for the heart. Some studies have found that grapefruit juice helps to reduce weight, and lower LDL cholesterol, too. Plus, with grapefruit being among the highest plant-based sources of vitamin C, it can help support your body’s overall health and well-being.

While grapefruit juice is one of the most valuable health benefits of grapefruit, there are a few other ways to enjoy the grapefruit to make it work for weight loss. Add grapefruit slices to breakfast. A cup of grapefruit juice counts as one of your daily calories for weight loss purposes, so save some juice for breakfast with some slices of grapefruit on top of your toast and fruit salad. Adding grapefruit to your salad is also a great way to get more nutrition for your salad.

Bring your grapefruit into the kitchen, place a weight on top of it and measure it. Over time, keep increasing the weight (when you see the weight staying the same, increase it again, and so on). Keep recording how much you weigh and how much weight you lose over time. Your goal is to drop 1.5 pounds per week (500 grams) until you reach your desired weight. Note how long it takes you to lose the weight you have. Start to measure every weigh-in to track your progress. When you lose half the weight you need, measure again and watch how long it takes you to lose the rest. Record your weight every time you go to the grocery store, and keep your recipes and food journal for yourself. Just as a scale is easier to use than a scale, weigh in and out throughout the day to keep you in tune with your progress.

More than just what you eat

Grapefruit is not only a sweet fruit, but it is also packed with health-boosting nutrients, from high fibre content and vitamins C, B6, B5, and folate, to potassium and calcium. Other benefits of grapefruit include improved digestion, skin quality, and mental clarity. And if you’re not drinking water, think about adding grapefruit juice to your diet as a great addition. Even if you don’t see a huge weight loss from eating grapefruit, keep the scale in your pocket so that you can keep track of your progress over time.

Dr. Joanne Wagner of the People's Center for Physical Fitness and Health at Rio Grande Health System said grapefruit may help to improve memory, cognition and muscle tone. She also said it can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.

Stacey Hamilton, the fitness coordinator for Rio Grande Community College, said grapefruit has been a staple fruit throughout human history because of its high vitamin C, and B vitamins and dietary fibre.

In terms of benefits, she mentioned that grapefruit can be considered a dietary antioxidant.

In the studies, grapefruit has been shown to be effective against Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that grapefruit may even lower the risk of certain types of cancers.

"Inflammation plays a role in many of the most deadly illnesses, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, lung disease, skin cancers, diabetes and cancer."
