Beauty for Ashes: A Guide to Black Owned Brands

I am more than certain that none of us forecasted a more wrecked year. In prior years I was known as the one to give gift cards (if anything at all) because they were the easiest gift ever but I vowed that 2020 would be the year that I put thought into my gifts and would buy ahead of time. There was nothing like rushing the aisles in my local shopping mall or the infamous waiting outside of Walmart 24 hours in advance for the doors to open to awesome savings. Tuh,I remember one year my Mother (armed with a store printout) assigned a section to each of us as kids to locate certain toys and all meet back up in the Jewelry Department signaling we had completed our contribution to Operation Black Friday. This year… was different.

Covid has in more than one way affected how we interact, shop, browse even breathe but more than anything- this year, Black Lives Mattered and I had to figure out how to keep that momentum up during the Holiday Season. I was holding on to my gift list and outside of my sons and Husband everyone else shared a common interest, makeup. As a Beauty Influencer, this year opened doors that were previously mounted closed to anyone that looked like me but now, they were open and I got it, I was going to buy black owned beauty products. If you are looking to support any of Black Owned Businesses, here is your chance:

Beauty Bakerie : Not only is the Owner a Cancer Survivor but her testimony about life and how she was determined to write her own story speaks volumes for her brand. The Bakerie themed brand steals the show from the cute names of each item but the overall theme ties everything together. The price point is a little higher than others but the color pay off is well worth it and a little definitely goes a long way.

Juvias Place: If you are looking for a color story that is vibrant and festive you are looking for Juvias Place. Not only is this brand competitively price and more on the affordable side but they also have smaller 6 pan eyeshadow palettes that are ideal for beginners.

DJS Beauty : While eyeshadow is in the works for this family owned business, when it comes to brushes DJS has you covered! This brand doesn’t stop with the brushes as they do include lip glosses, lipstick, highlighters and eyebrow pencils to name a few other items.

Icon by Bella: A Glitter Powerhouse, Bella has taken the beauty industry by storm with her creative yet sexy glitter combinations and mixes. She not only offers fine glitter but chunky glitter as well and trust me, sis can truly be the face of her own brand as an influencer.

I am certain there are dozens of other Black Owned Beauty brands out there, these are a few of my personal selections. Nothing we do, say or pray will bring back those Black Lives lost at the hands of police brutality but when we support Black Owned businesses we can put money back into the communities that need it.

Happy Holidays
