As a '90s baby, I admit I’m coming from a place of bias when I say the '90s was the best decade for everything from music and movies to fashion and makeup.

I’ve always kept my makeup simple. Eyeliner, lip gloss/lipstick, and some eyeshadow if I’m feeling fancy. Listen, I would love to have a “beat face” every day just as much as the next person. The reality is between a full-time job, being a mother of a toddler, and taking care of all the other demands in a day, I just don’t have the time or patience. That’s why I love and appreciate the makeup looks from the ‘90s. They were basic, yet effortlessly made a statement. Everyone had a natural “glow” and embodied the phrase “I woke up like this”.

I feel like I missed my time to shine because the trends I’m about to name I would (and do!) wear right now. So whether you’re planning a look for a ‘90s theme birthday bash, or just want to rock an everyday look, here are 5 things you need in your makeup bag.

1. Lip Gloss

I remember buying my first rollerball lip gloss. I picked it up from the local beauty supply store for $1. It was cherry flavored. I just knew I had hit peak womanhood. Fortunately, I've graduated to "big girl" gloss now, but lip gloss is a makeup stable that will never truly go out of style. Whether you prefer your lip gloss clear or colored, apply one thin layer or like to lay it on thick, a good lip gloss is guaranteed to brighten any look.

Tip: Pair your favorite gloss on top of a matte lipstick. Mastery level activated.

2. Dark/Blunt Lip Liner

Dark lip liner and light lip gloss. Name a better duo, I'll wait! The contrasting colors and textures create an eye-catching lip look. This is definitely in the top two (and it’s not number two) for my favorite makeup trends.

Tip: The bigger the contrast between the liner and gloss color the better. Remember the liner should be at least a shade or two darker than your skin tone.

3. Black Eyeliner

Grunge culture had a huge impact on makeup, particularly in the early ‘90s. Lining the upper and lower waterlines with a thick jet-black eyeliner was key to creating the perfect smokey eye look. Making your eyes pop is essential to any makeup look and this is a quick and easy way to do the trick.

Tip: Gel or liquid eyeliners glide on easier and help with precision. Remember we want drama, but not TOO much drama.

4. Blue Eyeshadow

Blue eyeshadow often gets a bad rap for being tacky or even associated with clown makeup. This look on the beautiful Brandy Norwood in the 1997 film Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella is evidence to the contrary. The truth is the right shade of blue can give anyone a bold, fresh, and flattering look.

Tip: When applying blue eyeshadow (or any bold color), be careful not to go all the way up to your eyebrow, but rather keep it confined to your eyelid. If you're still feeling anxious about it, check out this "how-to" video from Marlena Stell.

5. Body Glitter

Nothing says “I’m a star” more than literally making your skin shine and sparkle. Obviously, you should eat right, drink water, see a dermatologist, exfoliate, and all that fun stuff to get your skin glowing naturally. But body shimmer is the perfect icing to add to the cake.

Tip: Apply shimmering body oil to the areas of your body that will catch the most sunlight, especially your neck and shoulders. But if you end up going a little overboard, I won't judge.
