Everyone knows that life is impermanent, birth, old age, sickness and death are common, but when we are physically disabled, we can only lie in bed and lose the ability to take care of ourselves, and we can't even take care of ourselves, how should we face this life?

Do we really have no choice but to endure physical and mental pain and lie in bed and wait for death? for Ah Jiang Gan Peng, the answer is "no".

But A Jiang Gan Peng insists on practicing for six to seven hours a day, and there is only one secret to practice, that is, to do this small action with clear awareness. In this way, keep practicing and let the awareness take root.

A Jiang Gan Peng (Kampol Thongbunnum)

01

From slums to heaven, to hell.

Ajianggan Peng was born in 1955 in the slums of Wangfu in northern Thailand, where his parents made a living by boat. He studied in junior high school at the age of 13, especially loved physical education. At the age of 16, he was admitted to Benggui Sports Vocational High School. At 18, he was admitted to Kuzhang Sports Vocational College. At the age of 20, he entered Sinakha Sports University in Bangkok. At the age of 22, he became a lecturer at Antong Sports University.

Everyone thinks that Jiang will shine in sports for the rest of his life. He himself thinks so, the ideal has been realized, the whole family has glory, life will be smooth all the way.

No one would have thought that a PE teacher would become an enlightened master decades later. The change of fate that can not be hit by the eight poles just happened all of a sudden.

In April 1979, when Jiang was teaching students to dive, he made a mistake in the demonstration and directly hit the bottom of the swimming pool. Bangkok Central Hospital found that his fifth cervical vertebra was broken, completely paralyzed from the neck down, could only lie upright, and would be disabled for life. The accident completely dragged him to hell and never recovered for 20 years!

He felt that his life was completely useless. I even thought of putting an end to my life.

However, he does not even have the ability to end himself.

Because all over the body, only the palms can move.

Medical experts asserted that Ajiang Ganpeng could only live for five years at most, but he eventually lived to 2016, and countless people around the world benefited from his dharma education and life experience.

The experience of Zen in practice

After Ah Jiang Gan Peng was disabled, the elderly father could not bear to look at his son like this. every time he went to the temple to listen to the Dharma and meditation, he would bring back the works and recordings of the Dharma for him. In 1982, his father brought back the materials of Zen in Motion. Although Ajiang Ganpeng had practice at home, he stopped because he could not get to the point.

Later, he wrote to Gan Tian in Longbo, and this letter became not only the last straw for Jiang, but also the turning point in his miserable life.

Ah Jiang Gan Peng lies in bed and turns his palms every day. In the first few days, there are many thoughts such as anger, depression, doubt, boredom, drowsiness, confusion, chatter, etc., but little awareness. He felt that this kind of practice was meaningless and even made a fool of himself.

The honorable one told him to leave his thoughts alone and focus on awareness. Later, he tried to ignore all his thoughts, even the sutras and the teacher's teachings, and put aside all the insights he had learned.

"on the road to awareness, there is no need to bring book knowledge." From the moment he opened his eyes in the morning to before he closed his eyes and fell asleep at night, he tried not to let his heart get lost in the thoughts of the past and the future.

For at least seven hours a day, he is only aware of the movement of his palms and does not let his thoughts disturb him.

When awareness is rooted in the body, it becomes accustomed to and closely integrated with the body. Awareness becomes stronger, thoughts diminish, and his heart is clearly aware of the whole movement of his palm. This feeling is:

For example, I know I'm eating, I know I'm walking, I know I'm turning my hand. I know what I'm doing. Without being engulfed by the thoughts and emotions of the past.

Feel that the heart is moving, and the body and mind are two independent individuals that depend on each other. Look back at your body.

It's like an outsider and observer looking at themselves.

"my body is disabled, but my heart can be left undisturbed."

In this way, Ah Jiang is like an epiphany, continuous awareness, starting from the body, shining into the heart, completely separated from the body.

At this time, Ah Jiang compared this feeling: like a man in a dark cave all the time, he suddenly caught a glimpse of the light outside the cave. I firmly believe that it must be the exit!

From then on, he continued to practice to become aware of his body and mind, until one day he confirmed that he was now free from all suffering!

In this way, A Jiang Gan Peng thoroughly realized, revived himself, and carried forward the Zen in motion to the lost people all over the world.

Q: what should I do if I don't have time for spiritual practice?

A: we often hear the question of "no time", but in fact, most of them are excuses. Do we really have no time or are we unwilling to make time? if we are willing to make time for spiritual practice, we will have time. On the contrary, there is no.

My opinion on this matter is that "if we attach importance to something, because we see its benefits, we will make time to do it." For example, we attach importance to money, see its benefits, we will work very hard and have time to invest, or even work overtime.

Similarly, if we pay enough attention to spiritual practice and see its benefits, we will create more time to practice, and even we will work overtime to practice. It depends on how much attention we attach to spiritual practice and how much we recognize its benefits. Are we willing to give ourselves the opportunity to spend some time in spiritual practice, to really know our body and mind, and to find the most precious wealth that life should have? So that you can live without wasting your life.

Q: what are the changes in the mood and reaction of the people around you before and after your spiritual practice

A: before I practiced, I was in pain, and I also made people around me suffer, especially my parents, who were unhappy at first sight. However, after my spiritual practice, my heart changed, my suffering decreased, I began to laugh, and the atmosphere among brothers, sisters and relatives in my family also became active.

I am particularly proud that because of my change, my father also began to exercise his awareness, because in the past he only preferred amulets. When he exercised his consciousness, he changed greatly, from an irritable person to a calm person, and gave up all addictive things, such as alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, refreshing agents, chewing gum and so on. He set a good example in his family. On his deathbed, he also continued to be aware until he finally left peacefully, really a "good death"-leaving peacefully with awareness.

As for the mother, there have been great changes, and she is more pious to the Dharma. As her father used to do, she took the time to go to Sukado Temple with me to exercise awareness. A hundred years later, when my mother is going to die, I think she will die well, just like her father.
