Facial skin care should be an important part of your day. Let’s ‘face’ it; your face is your first impression on the world so why not create a routine that leaves you looking, and feeling your best? A good facial skin care routine is like any other good habit, taking just a little time and discipline to establish but well worth the effort.

So what steps make up a good facial skin care routine? Basically there are four steps:

Cleansing

Toning

Exfoliating

Moisturizing

The first step in a good facial skin care routine is cleansing. This is a vital step that removes the harsh environmental elements that damage your skin such as dust, grease, makeup and pollutants in addition to removing the extra oils produced by your own skin. Using a quality cleansing cream or lotion, dab on at several places on your face and neck and gently message into your skin using light upward strokes.

Using cotton wool or a soft facial tissue, pats your face and neck to remove the cleanser and dirt being careful not to rub your skin. Facial cleansing should be done each morning as part of your complete facial skin care routine and each evening to give your skin the best environment to repair itself while you sleep. A quality water-soluble cleanser is usually best, as it will leave fewer traces behind on you skin.

The second step in a facial skin care routine is toning. Toning will help to remove all traces of dirt, grease and any remaining cleanser left on your skin.

Toning, however, is an optional part of a daily facial skin care routine as thorough cleansing can be effective on an average day.

If you are not exposed to a lot of harsh environmental elements or pollutants on a day-to-day basis you can incorporate toning as part of your weekly or as needed facial skin care routine. Check it

Exfoliation is the next step in a good facial skin care routine. Our skin replenishes its cells every three to four weeks. Exfoliation helps your skin by removing dead cells that block pores and helps your skin have a natural glow.

Remember that excessive or harsh exfoliation can damage your skin and most people do not need to exfoliate daily. By adding it to your weekly routine you will help keep you skin looking and feeling great.

The final, and most important step in your daily facial skin care routine is moisturizing. Moisturizers protect your delicate facial layers of skin from drying and cracking.

Dry skin causes the cells to die of quicker and makes you skin look dull, uneven and can cause fine lines and wrinkles.

Choose a moisturizer that contains sunscreen for additional protection and that best fits your skin type. Dap a small amount over your face and neck, gently using light upward strokes to smooth over you skin.

Your moisturizer will work best when applied over freshly cleansed warm damp skin, so don’t dry too thoroughly prior to moisturizing.

Here are some additional things you can do in addition to your daily skin care to keep your skin looking it’s best:

Use make-up remover: make-up remover is specially formulated to remove make-up without drying.

Know your skin type: skin care products are designed for each type of skin. Using the correct one for your skin type will give you the best possible results.

Test new products: before applying any new product to your face, test it by applying a small amount behind your earlobe.

Never rub: rubbing your skin stretches and tears the surface and can lead to wrinkling. Always use gently upward strokes to smooth cleansers and lotions on your skin and pat dry.

Sunscreen is a must: a good sunscreen will help protect your skin for the drying and damaging effects of the sun including melanoma and premature aging.
