Smooth, Flake-Free Skin Overnight

Having smooth skin is something many dream about, but few seem to achieve. So many of us spend hours searching the internet for things like "acne miracle cure" or "how to get rid of dry flaky skin on face overnight," but achieving glowing skin is easier than it seems. The steps necessary to keep your skin looking beautiful are relatively simple and can be done by almost anyone.

Start with Cleaning

The foundation of a good skincare routine starts with cleaning properly. Choose a cleaner that's been formulated for your skin type. Making sure the active ingredients are going to help your skin goals rather than being counterproductive will go a long way. Once you've found a cleaner that works well, preferably one with an AHA or BHA to help chemically exfoliate, wash your face with it for a minimum of 60 seconds. This enables you to spend time really getting all areas of your face and helps the active ingredients in your cleaner work better. If you wear makeup, consider pre-washing using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, then following up with a water-based cleanser to remove any excess oils. This double-cleaning method is incredibly popular overseas and for good reason—it ensures your skin is as clean as it can be, and no residue from makeup or oil-based cleaners is left behind to cause issues.

Chemical Over Physical

A secret to healthy, flake-free skin is to use chemical exfoliants over physical. Chemical exfoliants, such as the AHAs and BHAs previously discussed, safely and gently remove dead layers. Physical exfoliants, on the other hand, abrasively remove skin and can actually leave tiny micro-cuts in your skin, leaving it open to infection and other issues. Chemical exfoliation can be done with a cleaner using the 60 second cleaning method, or an overnight serum can be used for similar effects. You should alternate these exfoliants with heavy moisture in order to help lock in the soft skin you've revealed.

Moisturize Me

Following up exfoliation with a good moisturizer will help seal in the dewy look you've acquired. Choose a moisturizer that will work well for your skin type. You may need two different formulas for day and night. One with SPF will work double duty during the day. Even if your skin is oily, you should consider using a moisturizer, as oily skin can be indicative of insufficient dermal hydration.

Be Naked

To help keep breakouts and clogged pores at bay, consider spending some time without makeup. Foundation and heavy powders can cause significant issues if worn every day, and spending even one or two days per week letting your skin breathe can help keep flakes and breakouts at bay. If you feel that you can't go without makeup, look for one that is designed for your specific skin type, and prime your skin with a good moisturizer and a thorough cleaning to try to minimize the damage the makeup does.

Pamper Yourself

Once or twice a week, consider using a face mask. Besides being relaxing and fun, masks deliver a concentrated boost of product to your face and generally stay on long enough to really work to correct the targeted issues. With the rise in popularity of "self care," finding a mask that you enjoy and will work well for you is easier than ever. If you don't like the idea of getting your hands dirty, you can even pick up a silicone "brush" to apply masks in a mess-free way. Follow up with a good cleaning and moisturizer, and your skin will glow for a few days.

Overall, using chemical exfoliants and focusing on good cleaning and moisturizing practices can reveal healthy skin. Focusing on finding a routine that works for you and your specific skin type can seem daunting, but is worth it in the end.
