These brands I will be mentioning are vegan and cruelty-free. Also, they are direct dyes, which means no need for a developer; you put the color directly on to the hair. You will find these fashion colors are semi-permanent as you cannot find permanent hair color with these unnatural shade. You will also notice these brands can be left on the hair for extended periods of time, because they do not damage the hair. It does the opposite of being quite conditioning for the hair. Most people leave these colors in for at least an hour as the longer it is in the hair, the more vibrant and longer lasting the color results will be.

Special Effects is a cream-based direct dye. This specific brand is one of the longer lasting semi-permanent color brands on the market. You will need to have pre-lightened hair, preferably to the light-yellow stage for these colors to show their full potential. Some shades you will find show up on darker hair as a tint. Special Effects claims to last three to six weeks on hair. I find that to be a true statement and a lot of the time this brand lasts even longer in my hair. There are twenty-seven available colors and eight of those colors glow under black light.

Manic Panic had been around for 40 years, one of the very first “crazy colors” brands. They are still quite popular today. Tish and Snooky are the founders of Manic Panic. There are 44 shades of their creme formula. Hair color works better on pre-lightened hair but some of the darker shades, especially the reds, will show up on darker hair as a tint. Manic Panic claims to last four to six weeks, though I find it lasts closer to the four-week mark rather than the six. Also, I find Manic Panic rubs off on my clothes and skin the most. The biggest plus Manic Panic has is the large variety of shades they provide for their customers.

Arctic Fox is an up-and-comer. This brand is much newer, and it shows with their limited amount of shade availability. Right now, they have nineteen shades available for purchase, but they are growing at a rapid rate, so I am sure many more shades will be arriving. As with all the others, these colors will show up better on pre-lightened hair. Arctic Fox does claim to last four to eight weeks, which is longer than both previously mentioned brands, and from what I have heard their claim is quite true. I have also been told by plenty of Arctic Fox fans that the color rubbing off onto clothes and yourself is not as much of an issue. Another plus with this company is that not only are they vegan and cruelty-free like the other two, but they donate some of their profit to help prevent animal abuse.

Has anyone here ever listened to Paramore? If so, then you might be happy to hear that the lead singer Hayley Williams has teamed up with her hair stylist and created a vegan and cruelty-free semi-permanent direct color brand called Good DYE Young. This is a very new company as they only have nine available shades. Good DYE Young claims to last four to six weeks as well. You will notice that with these direct dyes you really need to have pre-lightened hair to get the color results you want. As this is such a new company, there are not a lot of reviews out there but from what I have seen, most reviews have been positive and people love how unique this brand is. For example, the instructions are in comic strip form, which is a fun little touch.
