So they broke your heart. It's only understandable that you feel sad and wonder what happened for a while, but the only thing that hurts more than your heart is the burn you’ll be feeling in the gym. Soon the light at the end of the tunnel of despair will be your reflection with a body and confidence that will stop traffic. But where to start? Step 1: The Music.

Every journey needs an epic soundtrack to keep the momentum, and a fitness journey is no different. There’s over a century of studies that show how music can boost your athletic performance.

Listening to music during a workout may improve your performance by:

1. DISTRACTING YOUR BRAIN FROM FATIGUE by shifting focus from what is going on inside to what is going on outside. Focusing on your environment provides something for you to concentrate on other than how hard this workout is.

2. BOOSTING YOUR MOOD, making exercising more psychologically pleasing by tapping into the receptors in your brain that processes emotions and feelings.

3. REGULATING YOUR MOVEMENTS and allowing your breathing and heartbeat rate to align with the beat of the song.

4. MOST IMPORTANTLY

Your playlist should include music varying in tempo, rhythm, and LYRICAL CONTENT.

As humans, we are drawn to lyrics and human voice in music, and during sports, this hits on a deeper level. They can reinforce the fitness goals we are striving towards and assist us in our emotional endeavors.

For your workout playlist, pick songs with POSITIVE LYRICAL AFFIRMATIONS, such as Stronger, Simply the Best, or I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. During exercise, these positive affirmations are highly absorbable. With the right music, you’ll forget all about what’s-their-name.

Here’s my playlist for a 50 minute workout that will make you look better than any peice of arm candy ever will:

Drake · Passionfruit

You may need a reminder of why things didn’t work out. This song is all about an emotionally distant relationship. Being “passionate from miles away" may be complicated, and It may be "hard to build a trust from a distance," but with a pulsing beat and mellow tones, you’ll be “cleansing [your] soul of addiction" soon enough. He may want to "rule out commitment," but the lyrics will keep you committed to your fitness goals.

Robyn · Dancing On My Own

So you see them at the club, and the wound is still fresh. What do you do? Robyn says, just keep dancing. This song puts you in a trance, and you have no choice but to dance through the heartache. Best of all, those dance moves will burn some calories and may even attract a new partner.

Foster the People · Loyal Like Sid & Nancy

I mean, it could be worse. The title says it all.

Christina Aguilera · Fighter

And sometimes it was the worst. This songs is a reminder that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Relationships like these are life’s teachers in self worth what we should tolerate. Her lyrics encourage us to forgive but never forget and to keep moving knowing that you know better.

Beyoncé · Irreplaceable

You can’t have a breakup playlist without this song. Beyoncé is everyone’s best girlfriend tell you to that he ain’t nothing. Pack up his stuff and just move it the left. You can do much better than them and Queen Bey telling you is all the proof you need.

The Wombats · Pink Lemonade

This is my favorite song. You’re finally ready to move on but you still wonder who’s lives they’re ruining this time. They’re just Pink Lemonade, fake and leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you done. The best line of the songs reminds us “that's alright and that's okay. If I can write this song, I can play that game.” You can get through it.

Aly & AJ - Potential Breakup Song

Aly & AJ hypes us up and gets us mad enough to run miles. This is a classic reminder that you are the best thing that will ever happen to them and you’re more worried about getting your things back than the loser who didn’t know how good they had it with you.

Hailee Steinfeld · Love Myself

This song is about much more than simple masturbation. This is an affirmation for us to realize that self love of important. They may have hurt you but that doesn't matter because you can be happier in life and the bedroom without them.

Dua Lipa · New Rules

Sometimes you think you can be just friends. In this song, Dua is changing the typical breakup song narrative one of trying to move on from the relationship and establish new rules not go back to them. The fastpaced beat in your workout will make sure that even if you two can work things out to be just friends, you will ALWAYS be the better looking one.

Cazwell & Manila Luzon · Helen Keller

And sometimes you want nothing to do with them. This is song is the ultimate comeback. "We're done. We're through. I don't see you. I don't hear you. I've Helen Kellered your a$$....buh bye!"

Demi Lovato · Sorry Not Sorry

Soon, you'll start seeing results and like with any dog, they'll come crawling back. This song reminds us that we're feeling better than we ever have and the grauveling is just the icing on the cake. But sorry not sorry, we have better things in our future.

Kesha · High Road

After we had our moment of being petty, we have to remind ourselves to take the high road and wish them the best. Exercise releases endorohins and this song focus those hormones to move on.

Paramore · Rose-Colored Boy

With these endorphins, we have reached clarity and are able to see the relationship for what it was. The rose colored glasses are off and we can move on happy and healthy, knowing that the breakup happened for the best.

Lizzo · Soulmate

No workout playlist is complete without the queen of body positivity. This song is the ultimate self-love affirmation. Who needs to find a soulmate when you have yourself. She has some of the most epic lines will make us drop to one knee and pop yourself the question.

True love ain't something you can buy yourself

True love finally happens when you by yourself

So if you by yourself, then go and buy yourself

Another round from the bottle on the higher shelf.

- Lizzo

This playlist got me through a terrible breakup. I only listened to these songs when I was at the gym so I had something to look forward to. These songs are high impact and encourage you to be your best self. In the end, the only thing that matters is that you are in love with the way you feel and these songs will give you the push you need to make it there. The sexiest revenge is seing your ex while you are healthy, happy, and glowing.
