Anti-Valentine’s Day Playlist

Whether you have recently been through a break-up or are someone who has always disagreed with the commercialization of Valentine’s Day, then I have the playlist for you. Blast it while you’re doing your weekly self-care routine or while you’re driving in your car knowing that the only person’s agenda you need to subscribe to is your own. Here are some songs to get you started:

Potential Breakup Song- Aly and AJ I believe this one goes without saying. This song of empowerment reminds us that if someone we are dating is no longer serving the needs and desires we have, then they can see the door. The beat makes it fun to dance to and almost impossible to feel sad that we may be looking at a single life again.

Truth Hurts- Lizzo Another song with an empowerment message that makes it impossible to feel sad, Lizzo reminds us here that we are worthy of only the best and if we are not getting it: boy, bye!

Cry Me a River- Justin Timberlake A male lead on this song can still be enjoyed by everyone and be a beacon of hope after one has allowed themselves a grief period. JT states that though he may have once been heartbroken, he is reclaiming his future and that he will no longer allow himself to let others control his emotions.

Since U Been Gone- Kelly Clarkson Back to the female leads on this track, Kelly preaches about the freedom one feels once they’re released from a relationship that could have been toxic. Get it, girl!

It Ain’t Me- Kygo and Selena Gomez This one’s a little darker in content but boldly states the many sacrifices someone can give in a relationship. With a spiteful tone, they state that their ex is now going to have to find a way to fend for themselves and they’re not sorry about it.

Better- Meghan Trainor and Yo Gotti There is no denying that this is another song where one can see the tragic course a relationship took. With strong lyrics like, “Finally I can breathe again, the weight is off my shoulders….and I deserve better, better than you” it’s a perfect fit for our Anti-Valentine’s playlist.

Go Your Own Way- Fleetwood Mac We have to throw a classic in there! Stevie makes sure the one she recently split from knows that without her in their life, they are going down a lonely path and she makes it evident that she won’t be impacted by it.

You Oughta Know- Alanis Morissette Full of angst, this one shows how breakups can still leave you bitter even after your ex has moved on. Perfect for a sob fest if that’s how you’re looking to express your disdain for Valentine’s day.

Love the Way you Lie- Eminem and Rihanna This song still gives me chills no matter how old it gets. It truly captures how much someone can be gutted by a breakup and how much anger one can still carry after the fact. The last thing it would give someone is the warm, fuzzy feelings someone who likes V Day may be looking for.

Gives You Hell- The All-American Rejects For the last few songs, let’s bring back the upbeat tones that basically sic it to those who left us broken hearted and empty handed and show them what they’re missing. This song almost makes it impossible to stay sour-pussed.

So What- P!nk This song automatically brings me back to the nights spent dancing with friend and releasing any leftover tension and heartache. P!nk makes it so by the end of this song, you’re feeling free from any leftover angst you may have had.

Heartless- Kanye West Pointing the blame back on the other person in an upbeat tone is a great way to end our anti-Valentine’s song list. Kanye basically says that since someone didn’t care about his feelings and the repercussions the breakup may have had, he has no shame in slandering their name to others. Bitter? Maybe. Deserved? Probably.

No matter the reason you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day, one thing we can all agree on is that good music is often therapeutic. Crank up these tunes, let down your hair and release yourself of all of the negative energy one may associate with heartache, hopeless romanticism and an over-commercialized holiday.
