The Best Halloween Music Videos
By: Alisha Allen
My favorite time of year is Autumn. I love the color of the weather, smore’s, costume shopping, watching scary movies. That is definitely one of my favorite parts about Halloween. I love to cuddle up with a nice blanket and watch a good movie. There are so many good ones, too! I might do a movie review at some point, however right now there is something else that I want to talk about. Halloween music! I love to watch some Halloween music videos on Youtube. Nobody ever talks about Halloween music, mainly because they believe Halloween is the devil’s birthday. Everybody listens to Christmas music. Some even listen to it all year, however nobody ever talks about their favorite Halloween song. I want to help try and change that, which is why I have made a list of my favorite Youtube videos.
10. 30 Seconds To Mars-The Kill (Bury Me)
I love this video. I love how it has The Shining theme to it. Watching this video late at night took me back to my childhood and gave me memories of when I saw the movie for the first time and it actually gave me some chills, which is hard to do, nowadays. This is definitely a great video to watch anytime during the year, however it is especially great to watch during the Halloween season. If you like hard rock music, you had to have, at least, heard the song (unless you have been living under a rock since 2005). Still, you really need to watch the music video for it as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxEyxVnwHN8
9. She Wants Revenge-Tear You Apart
This is a great video by a great band. I had never heard of She Wants Revenge until I watched the movie The Number 23 last year. Hearing that song on that soundtrack made me go look up the actual music video. WOW! I was so impressed. First, I love how dark the video is. It gives such a creepy feeling. Second, I like how much mystery there is to this video. What exactly are THE REDS? What is Lydia? What is it that Tommy sees when he looks behind her ear? Like he asks, what is she? Is she an alien? Is she a monster? A movie maker could totally make a movie based on this video! Well, there is no movie for it yet, so we just got to watch the video and answer those questions with our own imagination, for now. If you have a nice cocktail and get a nice buzz, then watch this video with no light on but candlelight, this gives you a nice creepy feeling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixw_bLVUL34
8. Michael Jackson- Ghosts
It is true that one of the most iconic Halloween songs/videos ever is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. That song is just as iconic as Monster Mash. As well as it should be. Everything about that video is great. From the dancing, the excellent make-up, and having Vincent price as the narrator was just genius. Unfortunately, almost nobody seems to know that MJ did another Halloween/Video that was good, called Ghosts. That video is not as good as Thriller, of course. I don’t think anything is. It has the same dancing and it just doesn’t suck the viewer in like Thriller does, however it has good points that bear mentioning. I like how part of the video is in black and white. That gives it a harrowing feeling right off the bat. The black crow makes me want to watch The Crow, right after watching this video. The skeletons in this video take me back to memories of being in The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. If you want that feeling of Halloween when you were a kid, then this video is worth a shot. Give it a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh9Cp4rd7mI
7. Alice Cooper- Feed My Frankenstein
Now, come on! Alice Cooper has to be mentioned in this list! He is and has always been known for being extremely creepy. It is as if he breaths, sleeps, drinks, Halloween. That is exactly why he has been my favorite rocker since I was only 6 years old and the fact that he actually wrote a song about Frankenstein, well another great reason why he deserves to be on this list. There are many different versions of videos for this song, however my favorite version is the black and white version with clips from the Boris Karloff film. Genius! If you haven’t seen that version, then definitely check it out. This is a great video to have on your TV if you’re throwing a Halloween party. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz6m9yOwG-8
6. Rob Zombie-Living Dead Girl
Rob Zombie is another great artist who has made a career out of being known for how creepy he is. His movies are terrifyingly gruesome. If Rob Zombie wasn’t harrowing, then let’s face it, he wouldn’t be Rob Zombie. One of his best songs and videos, though is Living Dead Girl. Watching that video reminds me of the scary carnival ride with the evil magician, that mom never wanted us to go on when we were kids, as she feared it would give us nightmares, which lets face it, it did. This is another video that if you have consumed some alcohol, then it makes the experience all that much more intense. Definitely, a great video to try and get you in the Halloween mindset. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvsMPOfblfg
5. Spooky Scary Skeletons
This is a terrific video for the kiddos. Just like with movies, there are some music videos that an adult should not watch in front of the children. So, they should either wait for the child to not be around or put this video on for the kids in a separate room while they watch theirs. This is also a great video/song to play at places where lots of kids will be, such as a pumpkin patch, school carnival, and trunk or treats. There is a version now that is in color, however the black and white version is much better; at least I think so, anyway. Play this song for your children and hopefully they will love it as much as my kids have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1dSY6ZuXEY
4. Alice Cooper- The Ballad of Dwight Fry/ Killer/ I Love The Dead
I normally don’t like live videos, however this one is a phenomenal exception. I was at that concert. I cannot speak for every band; however, Alice Cooper puts on the best performance that I have ever seen. I love how he gets all dressed up in his songs’ characters. I also love how he has turned his shows into a family event. The nurse on stage with him is his actual real-life wife. Just like Rob Zombie’s wife, she totally supports him in his career. She gets involved with it. You can totally see all the chemistry in their eyes. As far as the song, The Ballad Of Dwight Fry has always scared me. The things that still scare me are things that can plausibly happen in real life. A person who gets locked up in an institution and doesn’t understand that they have actually gone insane. Yes! That is very realistic, which is why it is so scary. I Love The Dead, I don’t think you can get much more Halloween than that. So, this is a great video to watch around the Halloween holiday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XGUX3WNhbs
3. Bauhaus- Bella Lugosi’s Dead
Not many people know who Bauhaus were and that is tragic, in me and my husband’s shared opinion. The singer, Peter Murphey helped start the goth movement. They influenced so many other great artists. They were very creative. Who else writes songs about one of the most iconic vampire actors not being around anymore? I think he deserves it, too! Bella Lugosi was an awesome actor. He is the reason so many children dress up as the “Black-Cape” Dracula. This song can cause your mind to start playing tricks on you as well. If you listen to this song with the lights turned out at night and you’re the only one home, you think you start hearing things in your house, or are you? Great song. Watch the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVatiofd9lg
2. Ministry- Everyday is Halloween
If everyday really was Halloween, then this song would have to be the theme song to just about every house there is. What I love about this song is it is clearly a Halloween song, as in its very dark, however it also makes you want to get up and dance as well. They should play this song at every Halloween party, every night club there is. I think this is one of Ministry’s best songs. Some will agree with me on that, others will disagree. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, listen to it and decide for yourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFPI9b9N6CQ
1. Marilyn Manson- This is Halloween
You can’t leave Marilyn Manson out of this. No way! Just like some other artists I have mentioned in this article, he is shocking creepy. This man probably doesn’t celebrate any holiday, except for Halloween. I love this movie and this song so much. As much as I love the original version, his actually makes you get a chill down your bone, and that is what I like this time of year. If Marilyn Manson doesn’t make you get a chill, then I don’t know what else will. Enjoy this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU6iP0WLsU8
Honorable Mention: Siouxsie and the Banshees-Halloween
I just couldn’t finish without mentioning this song. This is such a great song. I love how it is on The Monster House soundtrack. That makes young kids get interested in the songs that we grew up with. I remember going trick-or-treating as a kid and some houses would have this playing on their patio when we walked up to ring the doorbell. Those were good times. Now, thanks to Youtube I can do the same with my kids now. If you like the song, then maybe you should play it on your patio for the trick-or-treaters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxEyxVnwHN8
Honorable Mention: Oingo Boingo- It’s a Dead Man’s Party
It’s also tragic that nobody ever thinks of Oingo Boingo when they think of 80’s bands. They were also very talented as well. It’s a good thing that they did break up though, especially since now Danny Elfman does all the music scores for Tim Burton. It’s super impressive that he is all self-taught. I love how Danny does the singing voice for Jack in The Nightmare before Christmas. It’s a Dead Man’s Party is such a fun song to play if you’re at a Halloween party. Another song that doesn’t get anywhere near the attention that it deserves. Do them a favor and check out he video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UbGtjnluyY
I have just composed a list of the greatest Halloween songs I feel there is. I hope you enjoyed listening to these songs as much as I enjoyed writing about them. Have a great Halloween everybody.
