It has been 11 years since the fallout of the rap duo Gangstarr, and only seven since the death of Guru, the lead MC of the group, who went into cardiac arrest after a long battle with cancer. Despite this tragedy, the music of Guru and Gangstarr has continued to grow in popularity with serious rap fans, to the point that the music will now live on forever— especially the smooth beats, tight lyrics, and more profound message portrayed in the brilliant classic, 'Moment of Truth.'

travus LerouxPublished 6 years ago in BeatKendrick Lamar and Multiple Album Meanings
Yes, it is. But not in the way people may think and not in a way that makes it worth buying the album for a second time. Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. is a fantastic record with a range of both trunk-knocking hits such as “DNA.”, “HUMBLE.” and “ELEMENT.” and thought provoking and mind bending revelations such as “PRIDE.”, “FEAR.”, and “DUCKWORTH.”. The record starts out with the expository track “BLOOD.”, a mysterious and somewhat haunting track that tells the story of Kendrick coming across a blind woman who he attempts to help but ends the track by shooting him. The record continues with Kendrick reflecting back on everything that led him to lose his life. The old blind woman can be interpreted as Kendrick having a run-in with Lady Justice and her taking his life is the culmination of all the social and political injustice that Kendrick raps about often in his music. Damn. is a depressing album at times, as it can be quite evident that Kendrick has little to no hope left in him. The fire within him to fight against social injustice heard on “To Pimp a Butterfly” is seemingly replaced with a depressing realization that maybe these injustices are self-inflicted (especially apparent on the voicemail at the end of the song “FEAR.”) or unsolvable. Kendrick is defeated on this album. He has been beaten down and is left with a tangible feeling of despair. He has been looking for answers all this time and, after all of it, he is left thinking that maybe it’s his own fault. He is truly defeated by coming to the realization that he is the cause of his own torment and anguish.

Here are my weekly nods of SoundCloud artists that embody the essence of what SoundCloud is about. SoundCloud is a music and social media platform used by independent and local musicians to share and post their various projects. Several well-known artists have started their careers posting their music only to be "discovered" later by major labels. It’s still challenging to make it in music industry, but there are opportunities now that have never been available before. With SoundCloud, you are able to upload your music, follow other users who are uploading theirs, and connect with other artists.

As someone that has followed BTS heavily since debut in June 2013, I understand how overwhelming it can be for those that want to get into BTS but don't know where to start. That's why I'm here to kick off this "Get to know BTS!" Series with my all time must-hear BTS songs.
Airess KimPublished 6 years ago in BeatThe Age Old Question New School vs Old School
There has been a lot of talk within the hip hop and rap community about whether people are feeling the new generation of rappers. Artists like Migos, Future or Lil' Pump get a bad rep from "hip hop purist" who claim their lyrics aren't up to the standards set before them. And to be fair saying Gucci Gang 53 times in your song isn't going to make anyone think you're the lyricist of the year, but is that all there is to hip hop and rap?

...Clinged. Clinged onto the good life, while evil is clinged onto me. Not every artist has an easy come up. Some are given a life changing opportunity, whereas others have to create their own opportunities... then there's me.
Jarrod-Michael WestPublished 6 years ago in Beat'Hamilton' Is Good... For a Musical
Ah, Hamilton. Conceivably the musical of a generation. This groundbreaking "hip-hopera" (hip-hop opera, come on!) shook the Broadway scene, the theatre enthusiasts, and, in turn, the nation. If you're [somehow] not familiar with the musical, let me get you up to speed. Hamilton is an opera, meaning that there are no spoken words throughout the piece. It chronicles the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. The nation is on the brink of the Revolution, which excites some-- and worries others. The story is full of drama, laughter, heartbreak, and-- spoiler alert-- death. The opera, written by theatre giant Lin-Manuel Miranda, alternates between traditional Broadway-style song, rap, and R&B. It's really an interesting concept: a boring, over-taught era of history is redone in an exciting, fast-paced musical featuring a style of music that is new to the theatre realm. I won't deny that Hamilton is a masterpiece... for a musical. Let me explain.

All Rap is 'Conscious Rap'
"Conscious rap" is defined as rap music which "challenges the dominant cultural, political, philosophical, and economic consensus." Which, if you ask me, sounds a hell of a lot like regular, old rap. The definition continues to state that "conscious rap" songs usually contain "positive, uplifting messages, often delivered over smooth ear-grabbing beats." Which again, to me just sounds like rap.

Over the past few weeks, it has been hard to catch up with all the sick releases happening. End of October saw Krept and Konan release their two incredible mixtapes 7 Days and 7 Nights. Halloween saw Skepta release his Vicious EP and Metro Boomin & Offset release Without Warning (which actually released without warning). Start of November has brought us new Dave's album Game Over and Wiley announcing a new album for next February whilst releasing a single from it this week.

Have you ever listened to a rap verse and been left exasperated; a type of mental exhaustion that leaves you winded, thinking "that was perfect?" It's a rare feeling, but a good one.
