Zappa Had a Fall
I claim innocence. It was a long week-end, and I had just finished reading a book that I needed to return to the library. I had not been there for a few weeks, and I was not borrowing albums the way I used to - thank you, Spotify - and I sort of wandered around trying to decide what to do with myself. In the stacks, I went blindly through certain compilations and found a stack of CDs that went back to my childhood, teenagedom, and my imagination. And then I found an interesting box set: 'The Mothers 1971'.

Is Walking 500 Miles (And Then 500 Miles More) Really Romantic?. Top Story - February 2023.
I love The Proclaimers. Really, I do. Craig and Charlie Reid. They are Scottish. They are twins. They are fantastic singers, write beautiful pop songs, often with very pointed socio-political lyrics and have at least one bonafide end-of-party singalong anthem in "I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Trainor & Tink: Made You Look
At age 92 my mother still styles herself as a coquettish cross between Tinkerbell and Meghan Trainor. Once I figured that out I had the tools to break into the mental loops she gets stuck in with dementia that’s suddenly wiped away her memory and abilities as the result of a tiny tumor growing in the space between her brain and her skull called a Meningioma. Don’t worry, this is going to be a feel-good read. Let’s get into it.

A Great City Playlist
Introduction I was listening to "True Stories" by The Talking Heads and the song "City of Dreams" is absolutely gorgeous. Then I started thinking that would be a great theme for a playlist and losts of songs popped into my head that are about cities or reference cities.

In Deepest Manchester
The image is taken from Vocalzone Introduction Around 1977 I was in a band called The Bok and we touted our demos to various record companies but the only ones who took any notice were Rabid Records. You can hear the demos below, but this is essentially about the general "Madchester" phenomenon, Factory Records, Tony Wilson, The Hacienda and other probably unrelated stuff.

'Rolling Up the Welcome Mat' for a new Kelsea era
In 2017, Kelsea Ballerini was Unapologetically in love. Her sophomore album was a love letter to her then husband Morgan Evans, about falling in love hard and fast. However, as her 2022 album taught us, things can be SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Bold Beautiful Black Voices. Top Story - February 2023.
Black women consistently make their mark on the music industry throughout the centuries. The Black female musicians highlighted here represent a sense of the past, present and future. These three iconic Black female singers leave me in awe of the barriers they breached; standards they set; and progress they made, much during very difficult political and historic times. I present these bold, beautiful black voices in order of when they arrived on the scene—their birthday, that is.
