The party was in full swing, the music pulsating through the air, and laughter echoing off the walls. It was one of those lively gatherings where people from all walks of life converged for a night of celebration. Little did I know, this night would etch a memory in my mind under the category of "That was embarrassing."

Many classic rock fans regard "Stairway to Heaven" as one of the best songs ever produced. And to this day, it continues to pop up on various best-ever compilations and lists. Yet few people at the time of its release, including the band members themselves, thought it would become the anthem it did. And even fewer realized how entangled with controversy and conspiracies the song would become.

I am a huge fan of music. Some people say my love for music teeters on obsession and they might quite be right. I started collecting records (yes, the old vinyl ones with pops and scratches) in 1972. I was 12 years old. By 1997 I amassed a collection of more than 17,000 record albums and more than 12,000 seven inch singles. At my peak of record collecting I owned 30,000 pieces of vinyl.

Is there a more romanticized figure than the forgotten folk-singer songwriter? Say the words, and the collective unconscious pictures a lone figure, guitar case in tow, frequenting smoke-filled venues, long roads, and broken hearts; maybe too: a pile of dusty LPs, where one more forgotten record is waiting for discovery.

I listen to some more than others, but I’m pretty familiar with all of them. So let’s get into it as we sit and wait for “Black Diamonds” if she is even still calling it that. If and when it comes I’m sure it’ll be just as engaging and enjoyable as the rest of these are. I’m mad that I didn’t get to see her this year on tour, but that’s neither here nor there. This ranking is mine and mine only I’m not speaking for everyone else just fyi. And we start with…

Introduction I've been seeing the Marc Jacobs advert for "Daisy" or something, and the soundtrack uses "Cheree" from the debut album by the band Suicide's debut album from 1977.

Note: This is my contribution to a challenge posed by Phil Flannery on the VSS page. His prompt: "I have written this as a challenge for the Vocal Social Society. Feel free to share the songs that you loved as a child but were unaware of their meaning until much later."

Okay, boys and girls, you have indicated through your clicking of the little Valentine heart and comments that you like it when I post these types of articles comparing one thing with another (Drug Dealers vs. Banks; Montréal vs. Toronto, etc.), so here is another one for you and yours: two powerhouse groups - one that I have loved from the moment I heard them, and the other a group it took me years to appreciate...and still have my doubts about while I accept their fame.
