10 Dark Americana Tracks Brimming With Quiet Anguish
If you asked me to describe one of the 2020's most popular musical aesthetics, I'd immediately jump to the genre that conjures images of haunted churches, grimy trailer parks and tattered American flags wavering in the wind. This genre has a lot of labels, including slowcore, indie pop and Southern gothic, but I've always thought of it as "dark Americana."

It's 2026. Songs Turning 10 This Year. Top Story - February 2026.
In 2016, we saw the rise of short form videos and what would lead to the birth of TikTok. We cannot forget the Snapchat filters no matter how cringe worthy some of them might have been. It was also the year in which the hit series Stranger Things debuted.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM
I first came across the name Gainsbourg when Charlotte’s dad Serge released “Je T’Aime . Moi Non-Plus” with Jane Birkin which was banned by the BBC for being too naughty. The music was quite pleasant but Serge was never bothered about stepping on moral toes, recording and releasing the song “Lemon Incest” with his daughter. There are several copies on Youtube if you want to investigate and it entered the French charts and number seven peaking at number two, It appeared on Serge’s album “Love on the Beat” in 1985 and Charlotte’s debut album “Charlotte Forever” in 1986.

Playlist: shoegaze to blues
Spacecadetbloom – Playing Cards Going back more than 30 years, My Bloody Valentine were on the bill at the first gig I ever attended (in the glamourous surroundings of Whitley Bay Ice Rink, no less). I’d mostly gone to hear the Mary Chain, but MBV’s wall of dense, swirling sound made a huge, positive impression. Blur, the odd man out on that Rollercoaster tour, also made a huge impression, but sadly not a positive one.

The Space Between Genres in Milan’s Live Music Scene
Milan is a city that understands scale. Big fashion weeks. Large exhibitions. Touring productions that arrive with full lighting rigs and precise choreography. Even in music, the dominant energy often leans toward spectacle.

More Songs That Make Me Feel More Alive
It's been six years since I posted my article Songs That Make Me Feel Alive Again. The songs in that list certainly still hold up and serve as a time capsule for what I was dealing with and how I was feeling at that moment in time. But the best thing about music is that people keep making it. There's so much new music as well as old music that's new to me. It continues it's pursuit of filling and fueling me and making me feel emotions I can't even give names to. So, to honor my original article's fifth birthday (which I actually think is in September, but disregard), here are more songs that make me feel more alive. In no particular order...

Playlist: one old favourite, two new
That Clare - Get Away Anyone who rates Songs of Faith and Devotion as her all-time favourite album and picks out Cabaret as another major influence is alright in my book. Teesside’s That Clare produces elegantly dystopian electro pop with a strong political slant.

10 Vintage Slowcore Tracks From Decades Past
While slowcore has enjoyed a major resurgence in the 2020s, the genre actually dates back to the eighties. Some of the tracks on this list might sound strange and unfamiliar, while others had a clear influence that's carried slowcore for decades. If you're trying to relax, study or enjoy a quiet evening at home, here's a look at a genre that existed well before Soundcloud.

10 Post-hardcore Songs for Your Early Emo Playlist
Post-hardcore is a broad genre that includes harsh instrumentals, catchy melodies and everything in between, allowing everything from Fugazi to Hawthorne Heights to fall under this umbrella. The bands on this list never saw mainstream success, but they're a little more accessible than pure hardcore or screamo groups. If your rock playlists need a revamp, here's what you've been missing out on.
