A mini dive into 2 NYC rappers that topped the charts & became fodder for gossip. By Brian Salkowski They were on top of the hip hop world. They were the second Duo to follow the first famous Duo- Biggie & Lil Kim. Of course, I am talking about Jay Z and Foxy Brown. In the mid 1990s New York City saw an explosion of new rappers and new sounds. Part of this explosion included "the rap crew". Unlike Wu-Tang clan, the difference was a female being included in these crews. Kim in Junior Mafia and Foxy Brown in The Firm. Foxy's union with Jay seemed more bankable than the affiliation with Nas (mainly because the firm album flopped in the charts). "Ain't No N***a" is cited as playing a significant role in securing Jay-Z's record deal with Def Jam. According to Sony BMG A&R Nick Raphael, "Will Socolof of Freeze Records sent me a CD and a video and said to me, "This guy is incredible, but he needs a bigger label to take over. Are you interested?" There was radio silence. Then a huge bidding war was started to snatch up Foxy Brown. Bad Boy or Def Jam. She ultimately went with the latter. Jay that appeared on her debut album. Foxy then appeared on his 2nd album. Rumors were circulating that a "Bonnie and Clyde" was in the works just like "Thelma and Louise" with Foxy Brown and Lil Kim was supposed to happen. Details are foggy, allegations and speculation went from the bizarre to sometimes plausible. Either way by 1999 you can see Jay and Foxy slowly distancing themselves from each other.

The Is Jah Wobble
Introduction Apparently, Jah Wobble's stage name came because John Lydon could not pronounce the name John Wardle properly and slurred it into becoming Jah Wobble. I loved his dub-based bass playing with Public Image but then when he left he looks to have tackled every music genre you can think of and a lot that you can't think of.

Introduction Dexy's Midnight Runners came on the radio covering Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said" and I thought could I put together a playlist of songs or band singing about other singers or bands. We obviously have something to kick off this one and another has just come into my head, bands named after songs, but that can wait awhile.
Mike Singleton - MikeydredPublished about a year ago in BeatHanson - MMMBop
In 1997, the world was introduced to a trio of long-haired, teenage brothers from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who called themselves Hanson. Their infectious debut single, "MMMBop," would go on to become a massive international hit, propelling the brothers to stardom and solidifying their place in pop music history. At its core, "MMMBop" is a catchy pop song with a chorus that is instantly recognizable. The song's upbeat tempo, infectious melody, and sing-along lyrics make it impossible not to bop along to. However, beneath the surface, the song also has a deeper meaning, touching on themes of the passage of time, the importance of family, and the fleeting nature of relationships. One of the most memorable aspects of "MMMBop" is the chorus, which features the repeated phrase "MMMBop, ba duba dop." While the phrase may seem nonsensical at first glance, it's actually meant to convey the idea that life is fleeting and that relationships can quickly come and go. The brothers have explained in interviews that "MMMBop" represents the idea that everything in life is temporary, and that it's important to cherish the moments we have with the people we love. Another key element of "MMMBop" is the brothers' tight harmonies, which are showcased throughout the song. The three brothers - Isaac, Taylor, and Zac - all take turns singing lead vocals, but it's their harmonies that really set the song apart. The combination of their voices creates a unique sound that is both youthful and soulful, making the song appealing to listeners of all ages. The music video for "MMMBop" is also noteworthy, featuring the brothers performing the song in an urban setting while surrounded by a diverse group of people. The video's message of inclusivity and unity is still relevant today, and it helped to further cement the brothers' status as pop culture icons. Despite its massive success, "MMMBop" was not without its critics. Some argued that the song was overly simplistic and lacked substance. However, it's important to remember that "MMMBop" was written and performed by three teenagers who were still finding their footing in the music industry. In many ways, the song's youthful energy and optimistic outlook were a reflection of the brothers' own experiences and worldview. In the years since its release, "MMMBop" has become a pop culture phenomenon, referenced in countless movies, TV shows, and other forms of media. The song's longevity is a testament to its enduring appeal, and it continues to be a beloved classic among fans of 90s pop music. In conclusion, "MMMBop" is a pop music classic that has stood the test of time. Its catchy melody, memorable chorus, and relatable lyrics make it a song that is impossible not to sing along to. However, the song's deeper message about the fleeting nature of relationships and the importance of cherishing the present moment also gives it a sense of depth and meaning. As Hanson continues to release new music and tour the world, "MMMBop" remains a beloved staple of their live performances and a reminder of the power of music to bring people together. Looking for a remix that will make you want to dance and sing along? Look no further than Hanson's hit song "MMMBop" remixed by Ric & Rixx! By Brian Salkowski It's no secret that I'm very biased when it comes to Nas and Hip Hop. I believe Nas is the best, emerging in the best era of Hip Hop in my opinion. Yea there were some solid and creative albums and artists that was released since his entrance, but generally the era of great wordplay has come and went. One thing that constantly gets brought back up is the debate of which album is better... Illmatic or It Was Written? My answer is equal. Nas' greatest accomplishment with 'It Was Written' was being able to deliver a tracklist which varies from an underground hip hop sound to a more mainstream sound by once again recruiting the hottest producers in the game: DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, and Trackmasters, Mobb Deep's Havoc among others. He did it with flawless delivery between the differing sounds. As far as the content being compared to It Was Written, they are both great in different ways.
