If you're in a band, the mission should be to be earning a regular income from your music. In this day and age, there are many different things that people to do for band promotion that work well. Social, like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are key, but now days playlist are becoming more and more popular. It seems that in a few years, as many people will be following playlists as listen to online radio now.

Today we'll talk about how a custom playlist can be great for your band and how to make one. We are talking about Spotify, but the lists can be imported and replicated for tidal, deezer, napster and more.

Type of List:

While there are many different types of lists. Some about new discovery, some for films, sound tracks or games. Most however are genre based.

If you're in a band, chances are you adhere to a style. Their are millions of punk, metal, folk, indie bands, but not many that do all styles. Once a band I knew was swing and then changed to disco, that went down like a lead balloon. So if you are a punk, metal, folk or whatever band, a playlist can help in the battle to gain more plays. Chances are your fans also like other good bands of your genre.

The cool thing about a Spotify playlist is there are no copyright strikes or ownership issues. I can make a playlist called "Best of Punk - established & new discoveries," have heaps of ramones, sex pistols, clash, nofx, green day, etc and they get paid, i get a playlist with more and more followers and can add songs of my own too.

There is never going to be an angry email from their record label, you won't get told off for helping to promote a band you love.

Search volume:

In terms of internet search a lot more people are searching for "best of punk playlist," than whatever your bands name is. It is a lot easier to promote an awesome list of the best in your genre too. With a great playlist it can be promoted in Spotify and on Facebook pages. It can also help to have your list promoted on your website.

Play volume:

If your song or two is on your playlist then you will get 1-2 plays every time the list is played your song gets plays as well. I listen to the Celtic punk list by spotify a few times a day on my train to work. The Rumjacks get a few plays from me a day but before this list i had no idea who they were, and i certainly wasn't searching for them.

How to make a Playlist: Spotify.

Making a playlist on spotify is very easy and even if you have a free account you can do it. Just click "make a playlist," on the app. Then browse songs, you click the three dots and add to your new playlist.

Quick tips:

  • Good-Name: Best of Rock

The benefits for being on a playlist are plays, but also you get linked with these bands in the spotify algorithm. This way your band is much more likely to get added by Spotify into their official playlists which are very popular.

The Celtic punk official list by Spotify has over 100k followers and gets thousands of plays a day. A playlist is free to make, host and another tool in the battle to get your band more fans, plays and money.
