Dance under the full moon

It’s not Halloween if you’re not dancing! Doesn’t matter if you’re grooving in your living room, if your in a makeshift dungeon (that’s actually your friends basement) or an actual night club in Berlin- if the music isn’t right you’re not having a good time! Holiday events already have enough pressure on them to be something, but really it comes down to the music and the lighting set up. The darker the better.

Now dancing isn’t about being good; it’s joy in its rawest form, it’s about letting yourself go. Feeling every beat and pounding of the bass in your bones and in your heart. Especially those spooky beats. Dancing is free and expressive and luckily - so is Halloween. Everybody is dressed up as something they love, something they want, or something that makes them laugh. It’s a time of gathering, of falling into something else for a night, and of course- partying!

Now, I’ve been to my fair share of good Halloween parties and my fair share of awkward Halloween parties. Nothing is worse than too many people just standing in the middle of the dance floor because the DJ is missing the mark, hard. Halloween Playlists should get under your skin and inspire you to groooove.

The key to a perfect Halloween playlist is the mood of it. You have to have a mix of classics, haunting beats, and new music. If it’s too moody, people get bored. If it’s too slow, people get bored. If there’s no variety, people get bored. So the best way is to keep the playlist in motion. Everybody loves the classics like Monster Mash and Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus. Those two songs help slip party goers into the right space. But then followed by Disturbia, oh girl everyone will freak out (in the most delicious way). There’s nothing better than singing along with your friends on the dance floor. Songs we recognize that are in the theme of Halloween, bring people together!!

It’s hard enough to get people to dance anyway but with the magic of costumes people are always a little more willing to let their freak flag fly. And as 13 Going on 30 taught us, everyone, no matter how old, can resist Thriller. Another key thing to note, is that Halloween playlists can’t take themselves too seriously. If it’s strictly too Halloween people will judge it as corny and not want to dance. Spooksville is the evocative embodiment of how Halloween feels when we think about it. Bats, Jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, haunted houses, all of the staples of Halloween have an energy to them, that can be felt. Spooksville captures this vibe.

Some songs lend themselves to the inherent sensuality of dance, like Kiss Me Until Our Lips Fall Off and Dracula’s Wedding. Others like Blank Generation and Pet Semetary make you want to shout your head off and run off to smash pumpkins. Thats key to the best Halloween playlist, including songs for hat capture the hooligan punk spirit that Halloween conjures in all of us. You can’t get lost in the theme of Halloween, people come to dance, and they still want familiar hits. Also everyone has a special place in their heart for 80’s music. Frankly it’s the best to dance too. I find disco is too divisive for most crowds but I still slipped Stayin’ Alive into the playlist. Try not to dance to that song, especially after some witches brew!

You want your guests to leave the party exhausted because every song brought them back to the dance floor. Or act as the perfect score for any connections and special moments that happen on that ghoulish night! You can shuffle Spooksville or leave it as is and never be bored, and even better never stop dancing until the sun comes up!

Stay spooky, stay grooving, and have the best party playlist, people ask for it like it’s a party favor!
