Single. Taken. Single. Taken.

Being dumped (or dumping someone) and going through heartbreak is hard, but it’s always a learning experience and something that you shouldn’t be ashamed of. Not every relationship will work out. Not every marriage will last. It can be difficult to make the decision to be single for anyone because not only do you have to deal with the social comments, you also have to deal with your own mind turning on you.

Single can be hard and scary when you were conditioned to equate single with sad, or bad. It takes a lot to get over the typical thought surrounding single life and takes even more effort to get your own brain to understand single is not always bad.

Music can help ease these burdens and let you rock out to them at the same time.

“Roar” Katy Perry

Everyone has different perspectives in this world- men, women, and children, male, female, what have you- everyone is treated differently and has a different set of social standards they are held by. Because of this, it’s hard for people to truly understand each other, hard to realize what pressures someone might be facing simply because we are not the same.

Women have historically been told to be quiet, follow direction, let males dominate, take what you get, to depend on a man, and just not to rock the boat in general. “Roar” is a great female fight song perfect for acknowledging what we are supposed to do and ignoring every bit of it. It’s about letting your inner lion out and freeing yourself from those barriers that keep you down, whether they are from society or the thoughts in your own mind.

“She’s Leaving Home” The Beatles

The Beatles are obviously very famous for their music, and rightfully so. This song is beautifully played and they sing about a young girl who leaves home for the first time and going off on her own. She sneaks out of the house leaving a note for her parents and she is off in the world. Her parents are confused and worried, but the girl leaves anyway because she wants to be her own person in her own world instead of just simply fitting into her parents’ world where she is alone.

She is not depending on anyone else to get herself out, the girl just leaves into an unknown world that must be better than hers. She remains a single person burning her own way through the world.

“Ridin’ Solo” Jason Derulo

The title is simple and to the point- Ridin’ Solo! This song is more of a party/upbeat song that just makes you want to dance a little. It’s about a newly single guy who has worked to get over his ex and decided to focus on himself again. He’s gotten through that storm of heartbreak and trying to figure out where it went wrong and he is ready to get back into a good place. He’s living and working towards his dreams, focusing on better day that lie ahead for him.

He talks about how he was torn up at the beginning but decided to work through it and get his shit together, which leaves him feeling so good, much better.

“Space Oddity” David Bowie

“Space Oddity” is one of my favorite songs because of the courage and peaceful vibe within the words and music. It’s about a man who’s blasting off into space, leaving everyone on Earth behind, and seems to lose contact with ground control- effectively getting lost in space. Even though the man is married, he’s all alone, not a single sole within hundreds of thousands of miles.

Although this one doesn’t quite fit the “single life is awesome” mold, it encourages the fact that being alone is not all bad and can, in fact, lead to many adventures in life.

“Me Too” Meghan Trainer

“Me Too” is just an all-around fun song to listen to- it’s all about being confident and knowing that you are full of worth. She knows she doesn’t need anyone else to make her feel that way, and she makes it well known. She’s so confident in herself; she loves herself and doesn’t see being single as a bad thing at all. In fact, she almost praises being single and having such a great mindset, acknowledging the confidence she has not matter what.

“Already Gone” The Eagles

The Eagles sing about a dying relationship (she’s about to dump him), but he scoots out of there before she can. He’s already gone and finding a life where he’s not held down by another person, spreading his wings and flying away to freedom and happiness. He’s alone and finding that strength he forgot he had.

Not only is life less complicated when you are single, it also opens up to much more mystery, adventure, and possibility of where you could be years from this very second. Humans aren’t meant to be single forever, but I think being single is good and brings clarity that you otherwise can’t find in life.
