Self love > Capitalism

Let’s collectively agree to change Feb 14th from Valentine’s Day to Self-care day!

1. Billie Eilish – 8

I’d bet that most people think that someone who’s Anti-Valentine’s Day must be a bitter single young woman with a wide collection of plant babies and fur children. Or a guy who doesn’t want to be forced into romantic gestures on a specific day of the year. My truth is that I am a late twenty-year old woman who’s in a very happy and healthy monogamous marriage and I would consider myself Anti-Valentine’s Day!

2. XXXTENTACION – NUMB

Valentine’s Day is a capitalist misogynistic holiday, now I’m sure it was never intended to be so, that’s just how America has manipulated it to be. From jewelers advertisements making women feel that if we receive an expensive shiny object we’re obligated to show physical affection in return to the chocolate companies brainwashing you into binging.

3. Kina – Can we kiss forever? (feat. Adriana Proenza)

On February 14th, the world celebrates a capital construct that inevitably forces couples and individuals alike feel like crap! If you’re single you have Sappy grandiose gestures of love and devotion shoved in your face. If you’re coupled then you have the ever-growing pressure to provide a romantic day if not week or whole Month of endless gifts, lovemaking and rendezvous for your partner otherwise how could they possibly be happy? Right?

4. Lund – Broken

Today, Valentine’s Day has been transformed from a tradition celebrating love, to a billion-dollar industry profiting off of the kindness and love of others. And in doing so has achieved making millions of people feel inadequate and/or filled with unrealistic expectations. Wouldn’t it be more practical to treat your partner with the respect and appreciation they deserve and not give in to the lavish commodities that are pushed onto us?

5. Ava Max – Kings & Queens

Instead of breeding greed and resentment let’s celebrate our loved ones and treat them how we would want to be treated. No need to buy a thing! Let us let go of our expectations this upcoming Valentine’s Day. If the day comes around and showing affection is just doing the chores for your mom, drawing a warm relaxing bath for yourself and showing yourself some tender love and care. To giving your neighbor some help with taking out their trash, or just saying a kind word or giving a warm smile to a passerby. Let’s lower the bar for the betterment of society.

6. Fleetwood Mac – Gypsy

Anti-Valentine’s day means celebrating the freedom of not having to spend all that money and energy on materialistic things, not stressing over what someone will like or not like as a gift. It provides a day to do whatever you want to be happy. Binge watch a comedy or your favorite show, spend time with your pets to soothe your anxiety. Our pets can offer unconditional love that another person cannot provide.

7. Basically, any Lizzo song but I’ll choose: Lizzo – Good as Hell

In the last decade, February 13th has become known as a female-friendly holiday to celebrate women and their gal pals: Galentine’s Day. It’s a day to gather with other women to celebrate female friendships – usually over a boozy brunch. This day like the notorious V-day can be best spent spending time either virtually or at a safe distance through happy hour, sharing your best craft cocktail. Painting together, cooking together, creating art and lasting memories. Or just a simple phone call to catch up and show your appreciation of their friendship.

8. Beyonce - Irreplaceable

You’re the irreplaceable one, and no one’s worth shedding a tear over. Sometimes when someone leaves you or you leave them, it’s the best decision you ever made. The best decision I ever made was getting the people out of my life who were just using me to kill their loneliness and could care less about me. You knew the head games had to end, and now that you’ve got a clear mind, you’re doing better than ever.

9. Ariana Grande – Thank u, next

However you spend the entirety of the month of February be sure to take care of yourself first. This time of the year is very difficult for me due to seasonal depression alone, adding the weight of making one day extra special can ruin several days in the process. So, let’s collectively take part in a little exercise, place your hand over your heart. Connect to your breath and take the time to really feel the constant drumming from within your chest with your hand. That heart is singularly, completely, emphatically yours. The body it dwells within is also yours and at it’s center, this symbol of love. This month is a time for you to define what it means to love yourself. Push yourself to recalibrate yourself and nourish your mind, body and soul. Make a point to say “I love you.” To the one person who deserves it more than anyone – you.

10. Linkin Park – Leave out all the rest

Nourish your body with foods that make you feel good. Be gentle with yourself and make sure to get fruits and vegetables, try to eat colorful whole foods because you deserve the long-term benefits. Bathe yourself with love, immerse yourself with your favorite scented soap, take time to massage your scalp and carefully wash all the places that may not always get the most attention. Take an extra minute afterward to moisturize your whole body. Show yourself the love that you deserve and dream of. Get your blood pumping, movement tells us that we’re alive and supplies us with endorphins that boost our mood. Take 30 seconds to simply close your eyes and breathe in and out evenly and slowly.

11. Khai Dreams – Drifting away

This is your time to treat yourself, relationship or not. And it can last just a few minutes, hours, days or even the whole month. It’s totally up to you, don’t allow societal standards rule your decisions. It doesn’t matter what the people on social media think or what anyone thinks. Do what makes you and your loved one happy. Be present, be grateful, just be.
